Yesterday I went to take a look at a hatch that's being sold localy. It is basicly in shambles but for $500cdn I figure its a good base to start my project. I looked the car over for about an hour examining basicly everything. There is some rust on the underbody that I'm not clear about. There are no holes on the underbody or anything.. just some rust that I'm assuming is normal wear for a 12 year old car but I took a bunch of pictures to make sure. The engine is burning oil and leaking rad fluid but I'm not planning on driving it much til post swap. Please take a look at the pics and help me decide.

Ohh and for all you cali people.. every EG around here that hasn't had recent body work done has rust like this. You guys are lucky to be able to find non-rusted hatches.

Rear tailgate is a bit stiff.. I guess due to a little rust on the hinges.

This is the bolt that secures the floor matts. It was quite rusty although the floor around it fealt fine. I'm assuming this is caused by snow getting in from winter driving but if you think the whole floor is probably rusted around here let me know.

The driver seat bracket is also VERY rusted.

Where as the passenger side is pretty much fine.

if it's one thing i can't stand, it's frozen/rusted bolts...nevermind the bodywork that thing needs.

Lots of work you can't do yourself (im guessing your not a mechanic) not worth the money or effort. There are other fish in the sea.

 

Stay away man. I know you'll be able to find something better. You better give me that car for free.

 

Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction of that "thing", and hide.

Awww boo this is exactly what I didn't want to hear. The way I'm looking it at is $500 for something to work with. $1000 on body work. $1000 on a hookup I've got for a '94 GSR engine and I've got a 14.5 second hatch for under 3grand.
I'm just thinking as long as the frame is alright then I'm good. I'll let the mechanics take care of the annoyingness of the rusty bolts. But I could just be dreaming. Remember this is only 500 canadian dollars... The cheapest hatches I can find around here are also rusted on the rear fenders (although not quite as bad it requires the same amount of work to fix) are $1500 more and have higher kms.
I need more details.. like what exactly it is that you've seen in the pics that worries you. Thanks for all the input so far guys.

1000$? that seems a little on the low side.. by the time you cut out all the rest from the rear of the car and reweld in new stuff, plus replace the tailgate, etc... its just not even worth it. It would be one thing if it were just fenders, bumpers, etc.. stuff easily replaced, but all that extra work.... What about the bolts holding the floormats, that means that everything else below that took the same treatment which means an even bigger mess. Rip the carpet up and I bet its all rust.

for 12 years that is excessive, for 40 years that would be normal

Sorry but NO, that is NOT a good starter for a project. That thing is a piece of ****. Youd have to pay me to take that off someones hand. EVERYTHING on that car will be a headache to you man. There will be SOO many seized/snapped bolts, and the body will work alone is going to be outrageously difficult.

 

That car is crap man. I would not touch it, i would rather see what $500 looks like when lit on fire then pay for that headach. I'll sell you my si hatch for $5k

IMO, the car is not worth your time/money. Find a better/more solid platform to begin your project on.
