Torn boots from Beverun
I tore a couple axle boots in my Hybrid CRX at Beaverun. The passenger outside and driver side inside. I don't run a lot of camber in the front about 1 1/4 because of fear that I will breaks axles. These have been on for 4 years without out a problem. My question is why would I tear boots like this? Is it because I was using all of the curbs and there was enough suspension travel that the boots got caught in the joint? I disassembled them and They still had a lot of grease in them and it wasn't all dirtier or anything so I am planning to rebuild them since I already have the tools and built them to begin with.
They really weren’t that worn. The car sits in the garage pretty much and is only driven to autox events and trailered to the track.
The track is really bumby coming out of turn seven and I was getting what a best can best describe as wheel hop. I not sure if it was the curbs or possible the wheel hop. I would like to know so I can try to avoid this situation next time. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul
Here is a picture. Sorry if its kinda blurry.

I still think it may be age and just plain ol' normal wear.
You say it sees a lot of garage time and that can actually help to essentially dry rot the boot since more of its time is spent sitting dormant; it doesn't get the routine exercise that a boot on a daily driver gets to keep it flexible.
I'm guessing that it stiffened and dried a bit by not being used so much that when you got it out there in somewhat enduring conditions, the boot just ripped when stretched/flexed. How often and closely do you examine their condition?
It sounds like the axle itself is perfectly fine though since it still has plenty of good clean grease packed in it. If this is the first sign of wear, I say reboot and you're ready to go again
