Default Transmission ID

As you can tell by my handle, I know much more about older cars than newer ones. I just got a 94 civic DX 4dr as a commuter car with a 5 speed. The transmission is making a "growling" noise when the clutch is NOT engaged, mostly 1-4 gear, not really when in 5th. From what I have read it is most likely the input shaft bearing. I am not sure when the last time the trans fluid was changed so I will probably try that just to see if it helps. What I am trying to find out is what trans is in the car. I may have a chance to buy an S20 trans real cheap, the seller says that it is for a 92-95 civic, but I have also seen a Y21 trans listed for the 94-95 civic. How do I identify the trans that is in my car, and if I have a Y21 will a S20 work?
