alright i changed my fuel filter and when i did i noticed it took quite a bit of force to get it off. i have a 97 civic and fuel leaks out of the bottom of the fuel filter. i tightened it as much as i could and it still leaks. any suggestions

 

Did you put the washers back in?

dats a pain in da azz....i always had problems with leaking after fuel filter swap. sometimes u gotta use da factory washers and sometimes u dont....just gotta play with it.

 

i just recently changed mine and i didn't use the oem washers. its gotta be that you didn't tighten one of the three bolts down tight enough. good luck.

 

did u use the right washer ? take the filter off and inspect the fitting. maybe you damaged it when you took it off. how did you take it off? theres a fitting for a wrench to hold it while you spin the other part that connects into the filter. and you should use a line wrench just in case.

 

Did you use NEW washers? They are like a head gasket ; not mean't to be reused.

And screw the recommended torque specs, in my experience it is way to low to properly seal the fitting. Tight it down by hand until you feel the threads can't stretch anymore.

 

alright i think i figured out the problem. the fuel filter i bought came with 1 big one and one tiny *** one. i used the big washer to the 17mm bolt on top and i used the tiny washer on the bottom bolt. my friend said he didnt have a small washer on his fuel filter. i tried to take off the bolt but im not strong enough to get it off and get that wahser out. hopefully tommorow i can get it with some leverage.

 

i have a similar question...

the new filter came with two large washers and one small washer. the two large washers go around the banjo bolt at the top -- where does the small one go? it "fits" in the bottom thread/fuel line fitting but there was not one when i removed the filter. last fuel filter change was performed by the honda dealer.

helm manual does not mention the lower washer.

everytime I did a fuel filter I tossed that little washer. Never did figure out what the hell it went to. Never had any leaks or anything.

 

The little washer goes on the bolt on top of the 17mm. That bolt is to bleed the fuel pressure off.

in most cases, you NEVER want to tighten things as much as you can, esp. on line fittings. over tightening a fitting can cause a leak. always work with the proper torque specs from a manual (even a $10 haynes has these specs). 2 copper washers should go on both sides of the banjo bolt on the top of the fuel filter. the 3rd should replace the on for the "inspection" bolt that goes into the banjo bolt. my 93 cx didnt have a washer for the fitting underneath the fuel filter.

 

Just a follow up and to answer my own question:

The third small 6mm washer is not used. The banjo fitting uses the two large washers. The bottom fuel fitting is a flared end so it does not use a crush washer. I believe the 6mm washer is for the top of banjo of the 96 civic filter, as that year was different than the 97-00. it was used to tap in to test fuel pressure.

 

fuel filter...common sense installed 3 of them never had any problems.

 

The small washer is for the test bolt, some Hondas came with an additional bolt on top of the main 17mm bolt, you caould unscrew it and put a pressure gauge or bleed off the pressure in the line. My 97 Sol didn't have one, but when I was at a junk yard I saw a 92 (o think) Teg and it had one, so I took it it and put it on my car. Oddly though, my Helms says that I should of had that bolt already. But I guess they ran out when they were assembling my car, so I had to get a regular one
