Default ITR goes rallying

Honda UK and BAR help out with rally ITR
Nobember 14, 2001 From BAR PR

BAR and ITV Formula 1 pundit Tony Jardine are both synonymous with the world of grand prix racing. However, next week Jardine and two members of the team will exchange the clean and sanitised world of F1 for the mud and thunder of rallying.
Jardine is entering next week’s Network Q Rally of Great Britain in his European Aviation-backed Sportinglife.com/Times Honda Integra Type-R. Part of his support team will be made up of John ‘Digger’ Digby, BAR’s Operations Assembly Manager, and Andy Markham, the team’s Hydraulics Engineer.
Both men have extensive rally experience which they gained before joining BAR. John and Andy have both worked in the past for Colin McRae, who will be fighting fellow Brit Richard Burns and Finland’s Tommi Makinen for the World Rally title in the championship decider which begins on November 22nd.
John said: "This is going to be a lot of fun for me. Rallying was a big part of my life and I still follow the sport very closely. If my experience can assist Tony, then I am more than happy to help out. The Honda Integra is a great car and I’m sure it’ll go really well."
Jardine will be fighting for honours in the showroom class category Group N. The cars in this class are much closer in spec to their road-going cousins than the high–tech World Rally Car specials piloted by the likes of McRae and Burns.
The team’s Honda Integra Type R has had some serious fettling done at BAR’s Brackley base recently. The BAR engineering team took the car into one of its race bays and climbed all over it, making tweaks, tunes and suggestions for the big event. Technical Director Malcolm Oastler was one of many who brought high level expertise and some serious rally enthusiasm to proceedings.
BAR marketing supremo Shirley Robinson commented: "Obviously we are delighted to support Honda and Tony in this project. John and Andy have a lot of expertise in rallying and many of the team members are avid fans of the sport too and wanted to be involved. Everyone here at Brackley will be rooting for them."
Tony himself is delighted at the level support that BAR and Honda UK are offering the project.
He said: "Honda UK and its dealers have been very supportive of our efforts during the last year and to get ‘Digger’ and Andy from Lucky Strike BAR Honda to assist on setting the car up is a real coup. There is no doubt that their presence gives myself and Kevin a great confidence boost going into the most important rally event in the world."
