Default Comptech Exhaust Rattle?

I have heard this once or twice and also from Len that the comptech exhaust for the ITR has a rattle at certain RPMs. Well I was wondering if anybody knows how to eliminate this horrible byproduct of the exhaust.

I looked under the car and was trying to see where it actually is rattling against and I dont see anything. If anybody knows how to fix it or at least what the hell its rattling against I would appreciate the info... I know you guys are always a big help so I will just wait patiently.

Get under the car and check all of the heat shields from the header back for any rattling or if they are touching anything.

Then check the exhaust connections, ALL BOLTS AND FLANGES, hangers and make sure it's all attached correctly.

Remember that there are actually 2 hanger points where the muffler section itself can attach to, one is high the other is lower see if they are equal, if not maybe adjust them. If they are maybe try the higher or lower setting to see if the rattling subsides. Check the axle section where it goes over the axle and see what's touching what.

Good luck.

No offense man, but the more you post things like this, the less help you're going to get.

If you call a group of people a bunch of ********, then that's generally what you'll get out of them.

If you haven't found that the exhaust piping is hitting any shields and the bolts are torqued down tight, then it is most definitely the b-pipe/ midpipe is cracked. I have a 1998 GSR with the Comptech cat back Exhaust and have developed the same problem. At around 3200 rpm the rattle sets in ( this is on the GSR, it may be different for the itr) this seems to be the point where the engine produces the greatest wave frequency. Anyway, I have had my Acura tech's look at the exhaust, I have had Midas (although they are not the best people to deal with for quality aftermarket exhausts) look at it and after a couple hours of labor they have told me that after adjusting all the shields it has to be the pipe. I then contacted Comptech and they told me that this is a problem with a "certain batch of their midpipes" and you should be able to have it covered under warranty if it has been purchased within 2 years and not modified. Call Joe Sierro at 1-888-626-6783 at Comptech if you want to get that taken care of. Well good luck I know that is the most annoying sound in the world coming from a $600 plus exhaust system.

Oh, to answer your question of how to fix it, I don't think there is one unless you take the pipe out and find the crack and weld it back together.

Hrm, honestly I did look at all of this and everything appeared to have adequate room. I know its none of the heat shields becuase it rattled the day I got it. Axle = plenty of clearance, and it just is strange everything looks like there is plenty of room. hrm.... I Will keep looking, I hope somebody has had this problem and fixed it becuase I think it would all be from the same thing.

Good luck.

Why is anyone going to help you when you basically call us all unintelligent ********?

And if you want poeple to ignore your stupid replies - don't post them. If you have nothing to add and want to call out half the board - you're going to get it. What did you think was going to happen??

Don't worry about it...you got some good info on the comptech contact. I'd suggest calling that since you're going straight to the source.

Is this a newer exhaust, or older?

The original Comptech exhausts with the aluminumized piping / center resonator had alot of problems. Nearly all of them would come appart and rattle.

It was supposed to have been fixed once the system went to all stainless, but I think there were still some issues.

Get under the car and bang on the resonator with your fist. My bet is that you can hear something loose inside.

Hope that Helps!

There is a flange on the B-pipe end and one on the muffler section. The comptech flanges are thinner than the OE unit's flange's. As you know there are springs on the two bolts that hold the flanges together. Those springs are not as tight on the comptech's exhaust as they are not the OE exhaust, therefore you get a rattle in the exhaust.

I took a trip to home depot and bought four washers. I put the washers around the bolts so the springs exert more pressure against the flanges when I tighten the bolts down.....no more rattles.
