itr as a first car...
I don't think it's a good idea. If you are going to learn to drive stick, then buy a piece of **** to learn on so you don't jack up a nice car. I got my R when I was pretty young but it was the third or fourth car I had driven. I learned stick on a Datsun 280ZX. I suggest you not use the itr to learn with. You'll either crash it or break it.
thanx for your concern...but i learned how to drive stick on my cuzins lude an i drive that many times( keep it on the DL!
) so i dont think thats a problem

i dont think its a good idea for a first car, im sure you will be too tempted to speed excessively or break the law in a number of ways. maybe get an ls or gsr, and then upgrade to the R later. you dont really need an r unless you autocross/track (but thats just my opinion)
If you can proved the R with a nice safe garage then go for it!
if not skip the R and get something more street wise.
You understand that if you take it to a mall or large public parking area you might not ever see it again?
Can you afford a beater?

Treat it just like a bike. Learn how on what you will drive on.
If you are not an idiot, you will be fine.
And remember, even though its a "type R" its still just a car.

Understand that the R is the primary target of every theif looking for hondas. Most people will say its a more a matter of "when', than "if". I suggest a GSR as a first. You'll have plenty of fun, trust me. For 99% of the time, the GSR can do everything the ITR can for daily driving duties...only thing the GSR lacks is the attention, which can be a good and bad thing. If you want to get more competative in auto-x and head out to HPDE's and whatnot, an ITR will be a very good platform, but I took my first track days in my old GSR, and I wouldn't do it any other way.
Either way, just treat the car with respect, and you will have less of a chance of killing yourself or others.

keep this in mind, it will be waaayyy less expensive (ticket wise) and make the world a safer place. not to nag on you but its truth, i was there once too. only my first car was a 2000 Si. beat that too **** then got a 99' Si...and now that ive learned to respect it, it has also learned to repect me. if u want a type r so bad then buy it, but i suggest you buy a second car for more of the driving time, and getting around. a type r isnt like your regular old integra, its a true race car in stock form. you need to learn to take care of it like it was your girlfriend....no joke. just be prepared for what you are getting yourself into, thats all i will offer you. good luck with the buy...-Deven

I'm getting a R as a second car, i'm turning 20 and buying one this week. It's my first car with a stick, but i know how to drive stick, so that's not a problem. It's a giant leap up from my 94 explorer i have now. I'm very much excited.

You will not have your R for long if you do get it.

I can imagine if I had a car that could do 150mph when I was 16. I'd probably be dead right now.

Exactly. I would recommend against it strongly. I started with an 85 Accord with 85hp and I still wonder how I am alive today. You drive much differently when you are in your 20's than you do when you're 16. I can't imagine if I had started with an R. I'd probably be dead.

if i were you mate id get somthing like an SIR or somthing, it stil has the speed but its cheper to get fixed if/when it gets damaged. my R is my third car and its so hard to resist the lead foot syndrome. if you think you can afford all the bills + insurnace then give it consideration
to be honest I dont think it will be a problem at all. I learned how to drive stick on my GSR and didnt tear it up at all. As long as you have respect for it. But all I know is that im fullyin in love with my car as the first day I bought it.
I think you only get this satisfaction when you were at the bottom wanting the best. And once you get the best you appreciate it much more... every single 340 dollar payment is worth it to me and i would continue paying that for 10 years if I had to for this car. Its all about relativity and perspective. I know many ppl who got ITRs without even knowing what they were and selling them for like a 350z and regreting everything becuase they didnt know what they had until they had something to compare it to. just my .02

It depends on how you drive it. I honestly don't think I'd be any worse off if I had a faster car at 16. I would have just wrecked it too. Actually a better performing car may have kept me out of more trouble than I got into. I definately was within a few feet of dying (or being seriously injured) 5 or 6 times at least between 16 and 18..
do whatever you want bro.....i got my R as my first car...my friends were like "WTF" cuz i didnt know how to drive stick yet, but i didnt care.....she's got a few dings and dents that would make some R owners cry but i dont care....after going to iraq, i've learned that you only have one life to live, so do whatever the **** you want....cept steal someone's R....the heavens will strike thy *** down for that ****!!
not a good idea for first car !
you have to drive other cars to know how well the type-r are made. if it's your first car i dont think you'd know why type-r is such a superior car. plus first car will always run into some accident, mya be just a small one but still there arent too many out there left jus tmy 0.2cent

I guess i agree with most
not a good first car...but you said its not your real first....so just take care of it...you know yourself better than anyone....if you have doubts then don't get it

i wouldn't do it. I know what i did to my first car, lost control of it around a turn. If it was my ITR that i totaled, i wish i would be dead then. Learned my lesson when i was young, which is a good thing, now that i have the type r, i keep it safe on the roads now
For a first car id recommend the GSR over the type R. I'm assuming you are young and in high school if this is your first car. Not doubting your maturity, but at 16-17 the majority of drivers arent the smartest in the world, nor really know the limits of their cars as well. Unless you were to seriously track this ITR and have a garage (i noticed you are in cali) you will probably have too many headaches theft wise. Dont get over your head in trying to buy a sweet or expensive car first, get something nice and in a year or two after you get comfortable driving and with a manual, then upgrade to a sports car if you wish.
The first car I ever drove was my R
I took driving lessons with it and got my license with it...That way I had the possibility to really get to know how it handles, brakes etc...and I've had it for a year so far and have never scraped it nor dented it and yes I do drive it hard very often...!
Any car can be dangerous...one with more power, but also one that handles worse and the list goes on! It all depends on how YOU drive and your willingness to learn the cars limits!
So in my opinion there is nothing abnormal or dangerous by getting the R as your first car, as long as you learn how to drive it with your brain

you're already on the right track just by being here on the board
i say this only by experience, as owning an itr and gaining knowledge from these boards has been a godsend. there's gonna be some good people you meet up with too, as i made a few over the years that i'm thankful i've met.
i guess the most important thing to remember as it is with any car, but especially the itr, is to have maturity respect for it. it is what it is, and there's a lot to know, appreciate and be aware of when owning this car. learning all you can will help keep an original R from getting stolen or totaled again like many before you. but best of all, your HT education will boost your ownership experience from average to stellaR
