Default Code 17 Vehicle speed sensor ?

Car - 1991 Crx Si
Engine - JDM ZC black valve cover
Mods - 3' Short ram intake

The problem is the check engine light comes on after about 10 mins of engine operation and its throwing a Code 17 (17flashes) Vehicle speed sensor. Also, my spedometer cable was missing, so I took the stock one off my cousins 90 HF but it doesnt seem long enough because the spedo is still not working. Im wondering if this is the problem, or does my problem run somewhere deeper like maybe the wiring somewhere in the car? Any replies would be great, thanks in advance. - Darrell

it's probably the cable. i used to get the same code when i would decelerate in gear. i took out the vss when i did the swap and hav'nt had the code since. also when you replaced the cable did you reset the ecu?

yeah; my cable snapped so my car will throw a code 17 after a bit of driving; the ecu knows it should see speed but it's not so it throws the code.

get you a cable and your speedo will work and the ecu won't throw that code any more

is there any way in hell it convert the VSS to a digital readout using the 4-pulses-per-revoluton?

Yea you can do it, but you need to get a newer gauge cluster so you can plug the VSS into.
