Snapped a bolt....... what to do??
hi guys, managed to cut my cam cover for my Toda cam gears...... turned out pretty nice, thanks Willard
, took me bloody 1hour with my dremel.
back to the topic, while taking my cam cover off i snapped one of those bolts that hold the cam cover on (see pic). Can this be fixed/replaced? if so how much is it gonna cost me? Also when you take the cam cover off do u need to apply some kind of gasket seal when you put it back on?? thanks for helping a newbie when it comes to wrenching on an R.......
cheers

it isn't necessary to apply sealant, but i still do at certain spots, i apply it on the corners and by the cams.
i've broken a bolt as well, to get a replacement bolt it cost 5 bucks at the dealership. u should only torque those bolts to 10lbs.
15lbs it breaks
be prepared for oil leaks maybe.....depends if your engine loosens at that spot.

take valve cover off an use deep 12 mm socket to take remaining bolt off....but first go to acura or honda to get a replace ment bolt!! you will leak oil like a biatch on crack out of that hole....ask me how i know....experience danielson experience...no i didn't break one a friend did...i had to fix it for his dum ****
Hmmm...unfortunately, as other people listed, you will leek and you "may" have vacuum pressure issues. The Acura dealer will probably laugh at you but explain what you need and they should help.
Hmm, take a look at my valve cover:

a bit more hard to do and protects better.

I feel your pain w/ this one...I've busted a couple of these, so now I keep them handy...here's the part #
90012-PM7-000

Easy fix...just go to Acura and get another bolt...I wouldn't suggest driving like that because you will leak oil. But its an easy fix so don't worry.

Also, there are different part numbers for the 4 studs around the outside and the 4 on the inside.
Sucks about the bolt...
I fear that I will break one ever time I loosen them.
The cut looks nice
Did you have a pint or 2 while cutting?

It seems to help make my cuts nice and straight.

thanks for the help lads......
yup the cutting of the cover was pre-emptive, i have the Toda cam gears already but dont know how to install them (yes sad i know
). I'll let my mechanic do the installation.
typer98: wowww a part number!! cool, saves me time from trying to describe wat bolt it is to the honda parts guy later on. Now are US part numbers the same as Honda Australia? anyone know?
Willard: no beer mate, i cant stand the stuff

Unless you have a good "calibrated" Micro-torque wrench, don't bother trying to torque these damn things....just hand tighten them in the order specified in the manual & you will be fine.
If you use a normal torque wrench, the lower settings tend to be "off" first after it ages, so a 75ft/lb wrench used for lots of other things isn't real trustworthy at 10ft/lbs...JMHO
BudMan - who broke 3 on the civic & finally bought a few to keep around. Haven't used a torque wrench on them since & never leaked a drop on the R!

i have never torqued those with a torque wench or wrench...just hand tighten with a 1/4 driver....can't put as much torque on a 1/4 driver as a 3/8 or 1/2 for that matter!
