Default In the market for a new bike- Am i ready for the r1?

ok i already rode on a the begginer bike250 ninja but that was only for 2 months or so about one summer while i was in cali. 4 yrs ago. Now i really want to buy my own bike. Im more mature now i think, i hope..
Do i need to start over? Begginer bike? or.
How hard can it be to learn the 2k4 R1? .
I took the MSF course begginer and after I rode on the 250 ninja for about 2months. this was all 4 long yrs ago. I have not sat on once since. So based on this experience can i hit the R1! or no way.. Back to basics?

hmm, msf course is good... some practice on small bike is good... but only 2 months of practice and its been 4 years? no way you should get the 2004 R1. all 2004 liter bikes are extremely fast and aggressive. right now, although you do have experience, it has been so long that i bet it would take you a while to warm up back again on just the 250, let alone some race ready liter bike

you have your whole life to get fast bikes, no need to jump the gun yet. also, getting a smaller bike will help make sure you do live your whole life

I'd take the course again to freshen up then go with a 600cc (Zx-6R, 600RR, R6, GSXR600). You will never be able to use the liter bike to it's full potential plus you'll save on insurance and possible save your life.

Ouch i knew it....
But even if i was a fast learner on 250 ninja? I remember i was only 19 then.
I never rode on the bike before. Went to my cuzin for one summer and learned on his 250ninj real quick. Then i enrolled on the MSF course had no problem with it.
It was great..

OK YEAH IM GOING FOR THE 600CC NOW> WHAT YR DO ANY OF YOU RECOMMEND?? ANY OTHER BIKES TO RECOMMEND BESIDES THE NINJA 250

Trust me, An R1 is in NO way as easy to ride and forgiving as a 250 Ninja. The R1 is a race ready bike and not suited for "newer riders". In my opinion I think a Liter bike is more for someone with atleast a few years experience. The new 600cc bikes are all fast as hell. Why the need to get an R1???? Just to say you have a liter bike?? Ultimately it's your decision, but get a 600cc and ride that for awhile THEN upgrade to a 1000cc.

well those yamahas are often used as poser bikes

i really dont see how a newer 600cc isnt enough for, um, every single person that rides on the road

Going straight on any bike is pretty easy. Have you actually learned to ride the 250 in the twisties? Most likely if you have to ask you are definately not ready.

i think its amazing how dealerships can just sell these new liter bikes to anyone. imo, it needs to be restricted to riders with years of experience.

most dealers are only in it to make money. They could care less who buys the bike as long as it sells. at least thats how they are here.

**** it just get a busa....

nah lol...
heres my outlook on it. so much of rideing is based upon confidence. if your confident in your abillities, and comfortable rideing your bike, then you will be fine. wether its a 250 or a 1300, as long as you are confident, in control, responsible, and comfortable with your bike then you will be fine. its just as easy to kill yourself on a 600cc bike as it is on a 1300cc bike. 9/10 times all it takes is a car to do the dirty work for you.

keep all this in check and ride responsibly, make sure to wear your gear at all times regardless of how stupid you think you might look. A little thing i like to do before i do anything that could be considerd "careless" is just ask myself this question. "do i really want to risk damageing myself to the point that i wont be able to ride tomorrow?" i guarentee when you ask yourself this that your tendencies will be much more reasonable.

so as far as getting a liter bike i would go for it. as a 600cc rider myself i can honestly say that the turbo gsxr1000 is the most amazing machine i have ever been on. JUST MAKE SURE YOU KEEP ALL OF THE ABOVE IN CHECK.

thats just my 2 cents

I work at a Honda/Yamaha/Polaris dealership in the service dept and just about all of the salesmen at the shop really don't care who they sell a bike to as long as they make the deal. The shop is near Camp Pendleton Marine base and we get ALOT of young Marines just back from the war with a pocket full of money wanting a new bike. The problem is alot of the bikes that are sold are 04 R1's, and 04 1000RR's that usually end up back at the shop for a crash estimate. It's insane how many banged up bikes we get that all have one thing in common, a DOD sticker. I've even lost count of how many people strap thier helmet's on and crank thier brand new bike for the first time and slide out leaving the parking lot.
NO BEGINNING RIDER NEEDS A BIKE THAT WILL DO 100+MPH IN FIRST GEAR!!!!

if you've ridden before, are naturally a responsible person and are willing to re-learn riding responsibly (hit a parking lot, etc. to practice), i dont see why you wouldnt just scoop the R1 up right off the bat. you'll buy a 600, ride it for a year and regret the fact that you didnt get the bike you wanted in the 1st place. just remember, lose respect for the bike and you'll feel it.

i agree with you to an extent
but you would learn more about riding fast on a 600 than a liter bike. personally, i'd hate it if i had an r1 as a first bike and was constantly getting burned by people on a 600s with the same amount or less experience

I think a lot of it depends on the person. I know some people that do not even belong on a 250. My first bike was and still is my 02 R1. I've only had it for about 9 months so I'm still learning how to handle it. I would say I'm still pretty slow in the twisties but I don't care I have fun. I'm in the process of buying gear for a track day so hopefully i can learn something. I went riding with an older, MUCH more experienced track racer once and I was having a hard time keeping up with him in the twisties. The funny part was that he had a passenger, HAHA. I got the R1 cuz I liked everything about it. If you're responsible and respect your bike you should be able to handle an R1. Just be responsible.

I would get an R6 if I was you, still plenty of power and will have decent resale value if you decide to get a liter bike soon

you're speaking from a "lets go fast" stand point, but alot of guys just go out to cruise with the occasional "get on it" down a few straight aways, etc. by no means would i buy an R1 as my first bike, then go light to light looking for 600's to **** around with. if he chilled on the bike for a year or so (same length it would take to get decent on a 600) he'd still be considered "experienced" enough for the R1, so why not start with it? again, i think it all comes down to responsibility and focus. go practice, learn to relax but stay alert at the same time. you'll know after the 1st few times of riding the bike if you made the right decision, thats for sure.

Do not buy an R1 if the only other bike you've riden is a Ninja 250. The Ninja is forgiving, and R1 will rip right out fro under you or loop you onto your back before you know what the hell just happened. I have riden for WAY longer than you and wouldn't get an R1.

??? what bike have you ridden on longer that still has you scared of getting an R1??? 2nd bike i ever rode was a gixxer 1000 and yes its a crazy *** bike and i never ever tried taking it anywhere near its full potential, but it wasnt some "impossible" bike to ride. dont see why the R1 would be any different. just dont be a dumbass on it.

I don't think an R1 is going to be that hard for you to handle if you can manage to keep it out of that whole thing they call a powerband. =P If you can keep it sane and ride it like a learners bike for a few months I bet you'll end up just fine. And then you won't have to worry about getting something with more power.. you'll have it at the flick of a wrist whenever you're ready.

Although most people can't do this. And those are the idiots that die. I know someone in my area that started out on a GSXR1000.. as far as I know he's still alive. I believe if you respect your bike and take things SLOW, you'll turn out ok.

I say go for it. **** the majority. Be safe with it and just learn for yourself. Maybe you'll discover the bike is too much for you and you'll get away from it before you kill yourself. A friend of mine (who is on these forums) rode a new R1 for about a week and decided he was better off on a 600.

You know, the new 600's these days are really fast. It doesn't hurt to look into them while in the market.

This is my point exaclty... if your asking, specially in this forum, your probably not suitable. Does not mean it's impossible, my very first street bike was a 1 liter cafe bike right off the showroom floor, but it means be careful

Ride a friends 600 after you take the course. See the difference in throttle response and the top end power of each gear. If you feel like its gonna get old pulling close to 70 in first gear and topping out at 160 get the R1. If you can handle using more of an rpm range and the smooth throttle response, stick with the 6.
