motorcycle security
i was washing my bike at my apt complex and a neighbor stopped by to compliment my bike and then warned me to watch out for my bike. his rc51 was stolen and from his description, he had the same lock that i'm using. lucky for him he got full coverage for it before it was stolen because another neighbor warned him as his f4i was stolen before. but getting even comprehensive added to my insurance is kinda out of the question since it'd cost about 3 times more than my bike payments.
my current lock
http://www.kryptonitelock.com/...rp=20
this seems to be the exact same lock made by a different company yet it has a 5 star rating?
http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcbeware/prolock.html
thinking about getting an additional lock at the least
http://www.kryptonitelock.com/...rp=20
and what do you guys think about this one?
http://www.kryptonitelock.com/...rp=20
and lastly i've been thinking about getting a scorpio alarm, but they are a bit pricey. i came across some ebay alarms but they seem too cheap to be true. they do seem to have the same features as the scorpio alarm though. anyone have any experience with these cheaper ebay alarms? if they're no good then i'll eventually end up picking up a scorpio alarm.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1
so i basically want to know which is the best option?
1) add the kryptonite u lock along with my cable lock
2) replace the cable lock with the new york big chain lock and the u lock
3) keep my existing cable lock and add an alarm with pager

dont get the cheap ebay pager alarms. I used to have it. 1st one burnt out so sent it back and got an exchange, 2nd one burnt out so sent it back and got a 65% refund. Thing is the cheapest pos ever...price explains it
yeah i figured something had to be wrong with a price like that.
best price i've found for the basic scorpio alarm with pager for 265 on kneedraggers so i'm really considering it. anyone find any better prices? or any suggestions on a comparable alarm?
btw, is that the girl from sassy girl?

yup, sure is
but, if i was you i would probably spend that 265 and get the scorpio with the pager if chances were high of getting your bike stolen.

thanks fellas
i think i'm going to go with a scorpio alarm and the kryptonite u-lock.
anyone have any experience installing a scorpio alarm? i read on kneedraggers that there's an oem wiring harness kit that makes installation a breeze, but it's gonna cost a bit more for it.

originally i wasn't too worried about my bike getting stolen since its no r6 or r1
but i figured thieves most likely won't know any better seeing as how a lot of experienced riders mistake my bike for an r6 just cause its blue and its a yamaha

bike security sucks... if u live on the 1st floor. or if its possible i would just bring the bike in the front door everynight.
we did that at my friends apt one time.. i was to drunk to go home.. and told him unless we brought it in, i was gonna sleep outside in the grass... im lucky he didnt just let my *** stay outside(prolly cuz i would have started some **** with the neighbors,LOL) and he brought me and my bike in...

nah, that is not gonna happen. i actually do live on the 1st floor, but the entrance to the 1st floor requires you to go up some stairs. there's always maintenance workers always walking around . and then there's the roomates... i'm pretty sure they wouldn't be too thrilled about the idea.
this sucks... i live in a relatively nice area yet i have to worry about getting my bike stolen. just can't trust people.

I got my YZF1000R stolen thinking the same thing. I will use a U-lock, chain and a pager alarm this time.

i saw a bike once that was chained to a telephone pole right next to an apt complex.. and i mean, this was a huge chain. and he had it go right through the engine somehow or under his front seat.. im not real sure how he ran it through there.. but it was prettty thick. and actually i think the chain was more bling bling than his bike.. i mean thats what i noticed first, was the chain. hahahaha
Lock to somethin that isn't going to move. I lock it up to my dads bike when i can and i also put the left side close to a wall and lock it on that side. But i have a garage and i don't lock it up that well.
one of my friends at his shop said he has seen a new alarm comming out by onstar so they can track your bike. he said it is not that exspensive but you have to pay a bill of 50.00 a month to keep the service with them.

If you don't have a pole or something to chain to at your home, cast a steel anchor into some cement in the ground or something. And buy some of that heavy lifting chain from home depot. The kind that people use to pickup 5 tons.
Moving to a place with a garage would be nice. Or run a friggin wire out from your window to the bike. There's no alarms that use something like that? Somebody should make one.

ok ok.. here it is..
1.tie a string to ur bike.
2.hide the string so it cant be seen, (at least not obvious)
3.run it to some bushes or something (ur window will work too)
4.mount a gun pointing rite at ur bike.
5.tie the other end of the string to the trigger.
now.. if anyone takes ur bike.. its gonna pull the string.. thier *** is gonna get shot.
(or worst case scenario, it could blow ur bike up and the thief) then noone gets it. and hopefully u have full coverage insurance.

The pic isn't me... its just to show my resolve against theives.
I'm kind of reconsidering that now. 1. I don't own a shotgun right now. 2. Don't really want to kill nobody. I do own a .22 pistol that would serve the purpose well, though.
Seriously though. I think from now on when I'm not riding my bike to work and it has to stay somewhere overnight, I'm just going to use my buddy's garage to park it. I think the main reason my bike got stolen was because it was an easy target. I had NO antitheft measures, I didn't lock the steering, the area was dimly lit, and theres little traffic after 1:00 am. I just didn't think my bike would be a target for theft, because of it's age.

they drain your battery (expect to trickle charge your batt every couple of weeks).
the OEM siren is easily disabled by ripping it from the bike
a battery powered siren is available... the battery backup keeps it screaming even after pulling the wires, but you'll have a problem finding a place to mount either siren
you're going to become paranoid every time the pager goes off when someone walks by the bike (perimeter alarm)
you can't get to the bike fast enough if someone dumps the bike into the back of a truck (false sense of security)
your best protection is comprehensive insurance.
a few ideas...
get a XENA disc alarm. locks the brake like a krypto lock, but includes an alarm that detects movement and lock tampering. the siren blares for 10 seconds then rearms. it's usually enough to make someone move on to an easier target.
get a krypto or bulldog new yorker chain. it should be a high tensile chain with a kevlar sleeve to resist bolt cutters. it will also protect the frame of the bike when you put it on. don't chain up the front wheel... you're only protecting the wheel and discs. chain it up around a frame spar... too much effort to try and take it.
dont waste your time with a lockable bike cover... a pair of scissors will defeat that.

i keep my bike at a self storage place right down the street from me. bc i live in a apartment complex too and im on the 2nd floor, i dont like leaving it out in the lot either.
its gated, 24hr manned security, video recorded, alarmed, need code to get in and out, and inside a climate controlled building, inside a storage spot , and locked. its like a hotel for ya bike.

so when you want to go ride... you have to drive over in a car, unlock the bike, ride, lock up the bike, and drive back home? so you basically can't ride it whenever you want (when the storage place is closed)
but it does sound like a good idea, its just i do half of my riding at night and my bike is ridden everyday so it wouldn't be so convenient for me.

most storage places are 24 hours... you get a gate code to access after hours.
