Default FedEx LOST my 4.78 final drive! ATS 4.929 replacement on the way. QUESTIONS.

Okay, I did a search and could not find the answers to my questions about the ATS 4.929 final drive.

Perhaps owners of this final drive can PLEASE help me here, Rodney? Others?

I was cool with the 4.785, but I'm actually kind of weary of the ATS 4.929. I have concerns about first gear running out too soon and/or tires spinning like crazy. i'm also concerned with 2nd gear being so short that's it's not going to really even be usable.

My wheel/tire combo is 15'' Rota Circuit 8 (12lbs.) and Pirelli P700Z tires. 140 A/A the tires seem to be pretty sticky.

Does any of this sound reasonable?

I'm dropping in a GS-R fifth, so I guess I'll be okay on the highway RPMs deal. I auto cross this car, and I MIGHT take it back to the dragstrip ONCE just to see what it will do, and I will be attending track events at various road courses in the Southeast, so will the ATS be okay?

YES i'm a whiney bitch, I know. You just have to understand that I wasn't prepared to shell out a slight bit more money on something like the 4.929 over the 4.78, and especially if it won't be as streetable.

Help PLEASE. Thanks in advance for the help.

I know, ain't this some ****! First the tranny screws up, and just when I think I'm splurging (is that a word?) on a final drive, i actually NEED the damn thing to fix it...

Then FedEx loses the ONLY JDM final to be found in the freaking continent!

I think I've got extremely GOOD luck though, because I'll be getting the ATS 4.929 for CHEAP because of my inconvinience...

I have NO choice but to run the ATS 4.929 I guess.

Anyone know what the 1st gear runout will be like? And the 2nd gear usefullness?

Yeah, let me spend nearly the same amount of money only to fix the problem - and still not see any gains from it.

Knowing my luck the part would be on back-order for a year.

Hey, it's good you're getting a deal on it then!

This is fortuitous: now we will be able to do some highway pulls and compare mods! Get some Jun 3's man!

ok, first gear will be shorter, but not that bad. actually works great in traffic, you can let the clutch out and the car just kinda lopes along at a crawl, easier on the left leg. also, my car doesn't burn out uncontrolably in first, but my ATS lsd might have something to do with that though. second gear is perfect for autocross. i am an avid autocrosser (after this past weekend, i realise i am national caliber, it's pro solo2 for me next year...woohoo) and find that stock itr gears with a ATS 4.9 work excellent. you can get into 2nd quicker and hold it longer on the tight courses. with a higher redline (my spec b setup for instance) 2nd gear can be made to go just as fast as stock 4.40 with stock cams.
regarding your tires, what size are you running? if you are running a small size, 195/45 or even 195/50 you will really kill 1st and your overall gear will be too short. but 195/55 or 205 or larger will work great.
and yes, you will be a whiny *** if you get the gsr 5th. think about it....how long does your car take to get from 8,000 to 8,400 in 5th now? forever? exactly...leave the stock gears and it'll rip right through to redline in 5th, although at a 12% less speed. big friggin deal. cost is no object when it comes to my car (shh, don't tell wifey), and if i saw any performance benefit of getting the other gears, they would be in my tranny. but, i stand by my original statement that stock itr gearing + 4.9 final is the perfect all around tranny. autocross, drag, roadrace and general street driving. maybe, on certain roadrace courses, at certain skill levels you might run out of gear on a particular corner, but chances are the benefits of the gear will shine everywhere else. it's a tradeoff. of course, you will hear whiners about gas mileage, but why are you installing the final in the first place? performance. that's the bottom line.
the car i drove this past weekend was 1greyteg's relatively stock itr (spoon 4-2-1, garbage carsound cat (flame away) and comptech ice box. it's a lightly modded CSP car, but i ran underclassed in SM just to strip someone of the win. yeah, i know, i'm a dick...but, i beat a couple of national champions, in addition to many cars that have for more performance than the itr. i KNOW for a fact, that if i had a 4.9 in that car, on that day, i would have gone faster. i guarantee it. ask el pollo diablo, he was there.

So can anyone offer some REAL help here?

Just kidding Rodney. Thanks for the very helpful info. I regret to inform you that I am putting the GS-R fifth though, sorry, I'm a little bitch.

My tires size is 195/50/15. I'm a little confused here, Rodney, do you drive a Type R or a Civic with ITR swap?

I can almost rip through 5th now, even with stock gearing - I suppose it's due to a low vehicle weight and the ability to rev up to 8900 if needed.

I do care about where the RPMs sit when cruising on the freeway - I do a lot of freeway running with a group of friends when we go out of town on trips and such.

You have eased any reservations that I might have had with dropping the ATS in.

Any more tips? Thanks again.

bitch. j/k. whiny bitch. i bet you have you mother but the ends off you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches......
seriously, with a 195/50 tire (22.67 diameter), you already have a shortened overall final gear. the 4.9 was designed with a 195/55 tire (23.44 diameter)in mind.
you essentially have a 4.6 overall final now. if you run the 195/50's with the 4.9, you will have a very short 5.1 or therabouts!
currently i have a civic with an R swap. one of the nicest i have ever seen (gloating) occasionally, i drive friends cars, like 1greyteg's itr. but, don't worry, sometimes i am good for useful infomation even though i am a lowly civic owner.

You could be mistaken about my car. Click below to see it if you want to.

I don't have the nicest coil-overs, and they certainly are not Racing Gear.

I plan on getting some REAL coil-overs one day, but with the tranny woes, Christmas, and the general LACK of funds at all times I can't afford to get nice ones for a while.

Rodney -- didn't you have a video of your car going through the gears after your ATS install? I'd really like to see that if it's possible. Where can I find it? I looked on your site, but never found it.

Try an LS 1st gear as well as the GSR 5th. I think you'll be very happy.

Hey Tom,

Would you take some pictures of the gear when you get it?

Maybe some pics of the install too?

While you're at it, just count the teeth on the gear! lol

Seriously, on your purchase. Now I won't be the only one doing this gear swap local.

Well now those bastards at FedEX found the 4.785, and it was shipped BACK to the company I bought it from!

The company called me, and they told me that the offer was still good for the 4.929, so I'm still taking the 4.929 MAINLY based on what you guys are telling me about it, so i'll soon find out for myself in my car.

The ATS will get here on Friday morning provided FedEX doesn't screw up AGAIN and lose the damn thing.

Yes, I will have a digital camers on hand hopefully to document the install.

I really appreciate the help you guys are offering - it helps to here info on a product from someone who actually has the product.

I might NOT be able to go considering the cost of all this tranny ****. The $150.00 was going to kill me anyways, and now i'm shelling out $220.00 in trans parts (bearings, seals, GS-R 5th gear, etc.) PLUS the cost of the ATS final, which ain't cheap even if i am getting a good deal on it.

Trey, you want a final drive?

the 205/50-15 (23.07 inch diameter) is slightly shorter than the 195/55-15 (23.44 inch diameter). not that much difference, only 1.5%, so you will have a about a 4.82 final.
