Default Advise for the noob that loves the thought of road race & autocross

I'm making the cross over into autocross but would ultimately like to get into some road racing but I think that may be difficult living in the south (mainly dirt tracks, ovals, and strips ).

I would also like any advise from the veterans out there on getting into the sport (where to start/what to do).

For now I'm going to start by getting involved in my regions autox events but I long for the road course... is there any hope for me in FL?

Um.....yes!!! There are tracks all over the southeast, Sebring in FL, Moroso, Road Atlanta in GA, Robeling Road in Savanah, and a lot more. Have fun!

Thanks, I'm familiar with Sebring and Moroso just looking for others and some advise.

Here's something I found that was helpful... http://chasinracin.com/track-l...shtml

From the looks of it, my only options are Sebring and Moroso. There's other road courses but for cart and bikes.

there is a track in Gainseville called Gainseville Raceway it has a drag strip but also a road course, they do Solo 1, Solo 2 I think, and other things, I believe Brumos Porsche uses it as a test track.

Thank you

If you hadn't told I wouldn't have known... that link to the map doesn't show any yellow dot for Gainesville

get involved in any way you can. that means even being a corner worker. sometimes you can get some free track time, but of course, sign up for a track day out there for a few hundred for the weekend.

tips? not really, just bleed out those brakes with higher temp fluid and depending on how hard you are on the brakes, get racing pads for track use only. learn on street tires for the first 5-10 times if not more. you'll be faster on r-compounds ONCE you have really understood street tires on the track.

My 2 cents:

Start with Auto-X, learn to prepare your car. Checking lugs are torqued correctly and only adjust your tire pressures to adjust the handling characteristics of the car. Please stay away from spending money on Modifications. Go in with the mind set that you are going to win with less.

Also, contact members of SEHC (South East Honda-Challenge). See if they need use a volunteer. This expereience is invaluable.

Spend a year doing this and see if you want to take the next step to getting on the track. I highly recommend you start reading advanced driving concepts. Truly understand how your suspension works. The more knowledge you truly understand the faster you will go.

Good Luck.

P.S. Never let anyone tell you you're not fast enough. Learn how to be faster (deeper understanding of physics) and then learn how to execute on those lessons learned.

Thanks to Mr. Bagel and Littleton for the great advise

I will definitely be working on the driver before I even think of working on the car. Although I don't know how my swap will effect the class I'm put in.

I might have to pick up a bone stock GSR to play with. Besides some minor suspension upgrades, a short ram and my ws cat back, my car is bone stock but it's an H22 swap and from what I here that will put me in a class with some fast cars like the S2k?!?!

Thanks 96 SOHC VTEC for the link

Start with autocross.

Then try an HPDE (high performance driver's ed) type event. This lets you try out high speed lapping in your street car. Passing is restricted and it is NOT racing.

Also volunteer for local club racing events (either with the sanctioning body or with a local racer). This will get you a feel for the atmosphere at club racing events.
