This has been discussed before, it DOES engage, the engine and ECU dont care whether you're going forwards or backwards, and they control VTEC. not the tranny. Its pretty dumb to try it..cars are not meant to go that fast backwards.

I'll do it just to say I did.
When I had a Civic years ago, my brother and I tried it if the ABS would engage in reverse. The answer is YES it would. After finding out the answer, we got so sick in the stomach and almost puked.

"Yes! It does go into VTEC in reverse.. but I turned the wheel a little bit, started a very bad attempt at a j-turn, then hit a curb and a tree!"
Yes it does work... btw anybody know a good body shop in South FL? j/k That is the one thing I would worry about when hauling **** in reverse, damn thing will whip around in no time flat.

In case anyone thinks their car feels slow now that you've gotten used to it, just go backwards to vtec! HOLD THE F*&^ on tho, 'cause you'll wreck in a split second of screw up.
There - no I did it, I can go on with my day knowing I'm a dumbarse
