Is it worth my time?
My buddy gave me his old eclipse 6x9's from his old civic (circa '99)
THe speakers have been sitting in his basement for prolly the past 3 years, and he has given them to me for free. my questions are as follows: is there a visual inspection i can perform to check and see if they are even worth putting in? Will these old speakers sound better than my stocks? is there a way to test they are not blown before i go ahead and take an afternoon to install them.
just looking for some advice before i take the time to install them

check the rubber surrounds for cracks or pieces missing. As for testing them just unhook your stock speakers and hook the wires to the eclipses. You don't have to install them to check to see if they work. As for is it worth it? It is really up to you. It will probably take you at least 1-2 hours to swap them out. They would sound really good if hooked up to an amp. IMO I wouldn't install them. Get rid of the rears and get a sub. Much better sound imaging

a basic visual inspection should suffice. look for rips, broken wires, etc. push in the speaker very lightly to see if it comes back out quickly and smoothly. is it two-way, three-way, etc? either way, if it's eclipse and it works it'll definitely sound better than stock. only way to test them is to plug them into a source.
thanks guys, i dont know much about stereo stuff, im an engine guy trying to learn.
as far as putting an amp to these, would a very small amp be worthwhile? just to power the 6x9s? i have no desire for a sub of any kind, so this will be the limit as far as my "bass" goes.....any suggestions on amps?

You dont need an amp...your deck will run them fine. Another test that you can try is pushing then down until they bottom out and let them come back up on their own...if the travel is smooth and quite with no sounds of "paper ripping" or struggle they are fine

ok, i think i get your point, bascially the rears are not completely necessary until you have done the fronts. agreed, has a valid argument to it.
so on that note, please suggest a good entry level speaker that is better than stock but wont break my wallet.
its a 2000 civic Si, and has the tweeters on the pillar.

ok, well a visual inspection wont tell you ****, they could look good but still be blown. what you need to do is get a multimeter and check the impedence of the speaker by testing the terminals. They should read around 4ohms. if they read any kind of crazy numbers then they are blown (the voice coil has melted.) if they dont read anything then there is an unconnecter tinsel lead or coil.
---looking at the speaker doesnt tell you anything, age doesnt matter either.

OK so FCM feels that EBP_Si's argument is wack, im not sure at all now, cause i know absolutely dick about stereo........BUT I WANT TO LEARN.
so lets try it this way:
I have a Pioneer Premier head unit, NOTHING fancy, just an average one that is a few years old now. i can get specs if necessary.
my goals: GOOD, LOUD, CLEAN sound from my interior speakers in all ranges. I am NOT looking for hardcore bass, nor do i want a sub of any kind, all speakers must be in STOCK speakr locations, no kick plates, no custom fabs. so that means the 6x9s in the rear, the two door speakers and my tweeters near my rearview mirror.
could someone please take the time to help my build a nice set up that i will be happy with, im not looking to blow anyone away, nor enter any shows or make my neighbors car alarms go off. just want something BETTER than stock that I can crank up and be happy with.
can anyone help me piece together a "kit?" (include prices if ya can)

I say keep you front stock and get the 6x9s becuase the front will get all the highs good enough now all you need is a little bass from the 6x9s so the music is "complete"

Well FCM is more than welcome to prove my arguements wrong but until then recommend following the advice given.

Don't worry Vapor, EBP, fcm, and a few others(including myself) have been arguing over the necessity of rear speakers from a SQ point of view for the last couple of weeks.
If you want my opinion, just install them and see how you like it. If you run them off your deck, it won't cost you anything but time.
In the end, the only thing that matters is how YOU think it sounds.

Don't like you? I dont know you. And I'm not complaining, I have seen your posts , other then one or two ,your "HELP' , dont do it,not worth it, its crap, more crap, and so on, is a little on the negative side dont you think. Why not,[when Mr. Vapor posts I got free speakers ] tell him how to check them so he doesn't waste time installing them ,and let him decide if he likes them or not, I stopped counting the SQ winning systems I have installed [ with rear speakers] 15 years ago,and don't have to prove or disprove anything to you EBP-SI [ I hear you been at it for 2 years] but Ill bet you that if you ask 100 people, 95 of them will say they would rather have rear speakers then not, and if they were free, 4 more would. 94
