does port matching your intake manifold with your head help out a lot? what kind of gains should I expect to port match my AEBS manifold with my 2000 B16 head

 

whats your whole setup.

smoother flow transition is always helpful.

 

just a stock B16A2 with AEBS intake manifold

 

Well...usually the ports of the intake manifold are slightly bigger than the ports of a stock head,so you couldnt really port match..but you can have it polished and have the casting flaws removed...which will help slightly.

 

yeah removing cast flaws is good too. especially needed with the AEBS manifolds since they are supposedly really rough.

 

You want the intake manifold to be slightly smaller than the port on the head, and you want the exhaust port to be slightly smaller than the header port.

 

not all the time you dont.

 

In any instance I've heard where they made lots of power, this was the case. but hey, do whatever you want to do.

the best thing to do would to gasket match the head and intake so that the gasket doesn't protrude into the air velocity pathway. the faster the air moves the more air fills the cylinders at higher rpms, so any imperfections in the way of the intake charge will slow down the speed of the air mixture, but also remember an intake isn't suppose to flow max cfm to be effective, the fuel needs contact w/ the head to totally vaporize the fuel before it is ignited so the more the air contacts the heated head the better the vapor and higher the cylinder pressures will be at the time of combustion so when you gasket match a head do not perfectly smooth the head, use a circular sanding bit in a circular pattern about a 1/4" in to promote aggitation of the charged air and ultimately a better performing motor. in lamens terms

 

Most of the time,its best to have the exhaust port smaller than the header port because :
A:its less restriction that the header will cause and
B:It's anti reversion effects on the exhaust gasses
The only time that having the intake manifold port smaller than the intake ports on the head is better is on a street engine,where it helps speed up the air and acts like a venturi(ventuli) plate...but this is mostly beneficial in the low to mid range..it doesnt do much for top end,and can actually hurt top end...on race engines,you NEVER want the IM ports smaller than the head ports.

 

With the amount of overlap on a VTEC cam, you want some kind of anti-reversion on the intake as well, from what I have read anyway.

 

If its done to a AEBS manifold.. I could assume you would gain a lot.. that damn manifold comes with the ports really uneven and small...
I got one and the ports were terribly uneven and the coolant passage was half the size as the one on the head.

I matched ported it and opened up the throttle body side to 67mm for my TB.

 

wow the AEBS is that bad huh. i had thought that it was just rough. but uneven and small ports. do you have pics of before and after?

 

No sorry, I never took pictures of it before.. but at plain sight you could see how bad it was... the thing that jumped to my right away was that coolant passage.. damn it was freakin small..

Anyways... I sent it with my ported IM gasket to match and polish.. and it was all good.
