Why?

The trade-off for being 0.001 seconds faster in a straight line is not worth killing the transmission.

yeah....don't do it...thats my opinion. its not worth tearing up the synchros and bouncing off the limiter when you can lift your foot off the accelorator for a blip

What exactally is powershifting?
Is that when you don't press in the clutch at all?

Read about my R tranny here:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=87792

Lucky for me I work at a shop and I was planning to slap the JDM 4.785 final in anyways. When you say powershfting, do you mean shifting w/o EVER letting off of the gas?

I think he means not letting off of the gas when shifting, right? If so, you can actually increase the wheelspin as you catch each gear, which could actually slow you down.

I used to do this with my D16Z6 SOHC VTEC in my Civic, and I found it to be not a DAMN bit quicker, and it's hell on the engine and tranny.

In my experience with racing in a straight line in my bone stock Type R Power shifting(my version: Using the clutch, but not letting off the gas) is atleast 2-3 tenths faster. I tested this out one day at the track when a bunch of us rented out bandimer Speedway, I got over 15 runs and power shifting was faster each and every time.
My 0.2.

That's only abusing your clutch... I think that's ok cause hey, what are clutches for? However slamming gears without the clutch is a whole 'nother story.

problem is...if its not done exact every time...its not your clutch being abused...its your tranny. The question is....is it worth it or not. believe me...i'm tough on trannies and i don't power shift

Yup,
I'm sure it's pisses the clutch off pretty bad, but oh well it's just a clutch. Might as well have fun now and do clutch whenever it's time.

Jeff, are you referring to with clutch or without clutch?

What i'm saying is....if you powershift(with clutch)the chances that your going to shift it that fast into gear every time are slim and none. Yes...its faster and will help your time a tick....but is it worth abusing your tranny when your NOT going to powershift perfect every time? Some will say....whats the difference...your still depressing the clutch just as normal.... and i say to that...i wanna see you not miss shift every time powershifting.

I use an extreme stage 5 Clutchmasters PP and disc. My clutch engages nasty. There is no slip in this. Its pretty much..engage or not engaged. I was however surprised on how nice it feels and how easy i can drive it around though. i guess maybe with a stock clutch you can get away with it easier then i can i suppose

Well, I'm pretty sure that if we're talking about shifting w/o letting off the gas then the tranny could take a lot of abuse depending on which clutch you run. I run the ACT Xtreme Pressure plate w/hybrid lined street disc, and although it engages smoothly, if I were to shift w/o letting off the gas I would be subjecting my tranny to WHEEL hop even more so, and unloading a LSD and then loading it up rapidly can **** it up badly.

Anyone else agree? If both wheels hop and then come back down hard, you're risking some serious damage to the LSD - which isn't cheap - and you must ask yourslef if it's worth the .2 off of your time.

Isn't that what you do when you launch the car anyway? Dropping the clutch when the motor is spinning faster than the input shaft?

yup. and you have to be making quite a bit of power to mess up an LSD(not talking phantom grip)

So basically, power-shifting (using clutch but never taking foot off throttle) is just like dropping clutch in regards to your tranny. I realize drop clutch launching is not really good for your tranny, but the two are comparable. However I think that a drop launch is probably a little worse than a "drop shift," as when shifting the shafts already have some rotational inertia and the torque from the clutch engagement would be less damaging, but significantly wearing nonetheless.

Think of it in this light too:

If shifting on or near redline, WITH foot still all the way in the gas, when the clutch is pressed the motor will SIT on the rev limiter until the gear catches again.

I'm not so sure I'd like to do that too often.

BTW: I'm only making 175hp to the wheels, and I STILL broke the COUNTER shaft. I'd like to think that some case-hardened gears WOULD be strong, but then again, I'm sitting here looking at a countershaft minus 4 teeth from the gear on it.

Factory LSDs are not all that beefy - it really wouldn't take too much whp to screw one up, right?

Just to clarify, wheel hop = bad right?

I aways either get wheelhop or a chirp when shifting from redline

HA! Look here at the carnage of tranny abuse!

Keep on powershifting! Don't want to break that last piece there...

i always thought power shifting is shifting when u clutch, let up on the gas half way, select gear, hit gas... basically shifting w/o getting up on the gas...???
