How to Insure Aftermarket Parts?
Does anybody know what type of addition I need on top of my insurance policy to cover aftermarket parts. I'm a little hesitant putting a lot of money in a car that's notorious for being stolen no matter what kind of security is used.

chris, call you insurance company and tell them you want to insure the R for a certain amount...ie $25,000...if anything happens...they pay you $25,000
your premiums will go up of course

FWIW, my Sol was stolen in March, had ~$6000 in receipts for aftermarket parts, and with a tiny bit of prodding State Farm gave me what I would've wanted out of the car had I sold it privately.
They seemed to do a good job of judging what the parts were worth on the car, rather than paying me what the parts were worth "parted out." I know this doesn't really help your question, just telling my story

Just call your broker/Agent and I'm sure they will be able to tell you in full detail. One of the methods is the one Marc mentioned which is simple, but has its flaws. If the car is partially stripped/ Or several big items were stolen, they won't know what to pay. And it can become a guessing game...
Itemized list is the hardest but covers your *** well.
Like I said call your Broker/ Agent and I'm sure they will help you. Everything varies from Co to Co.
good luck.

Thanks guys. One more question...how about used parts bought from private transactions that didn't involve receipts. Is there any way to cover those parts?

i have receipts from all my private transactions. i typed them up with seller, buyer, and item info. both the seller and buyer signs it and dates it. so far my insurance agent said it will work.
