is there a difference between a usdm obd1 and a jdm one?

As far as wiring goes, no. The JDM ecu itself is smaller because of the use of surface mount technology.

What ecu are you talking about?

It's basically non-leaded components, they(resistors, caps, etc) are reduced in size and don't take up as much space as normal size parts. They look like small chips on the board.
