You also take the risk of cracking Rings and burning oil if you do it fast and hard.

And slow and easy is good for an angine that is going to be driven slow and easy.

Exactly! That has been my experience as well as quite a few people on this board.
Check this out: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I have used this method, and the motor doesn't burn any oil, though I have not dynoed or checked compression yet. I will admit I am wrong if/when I dyno/check compression and the results suck, but so far so good!

First thing after building it is to get it tuned, otherwise the consequeces are costly.
Break it in gently so that everything can seat correctly, also once its been running a couple of minutes you should IMO (eg motor h22a) hold the revs at 4k for several minutes and this will help seat the cams and rings etc. i wouldmix driving with it once tuned but not beat on it for a couple of hundred miles. If you really beaton a fresh motor its been found that generally you have premature wear because of not letting the components and bearings seat correctly.

you can always have them pre break in the motor on the dyno since th emotor is out... and you spent like 5 thousand on building it already

Motoman does NOT recommend that you beat the snot out of your newly built motor. He just says dont baby it. He outlines a method for slowly increasing engine rpm and throttle.

I havent broken mine in yet, but I will do the slow/easy method, but increase RPM's slowly over time. I have a new clutch going on with the rest of the new parts, so I'll just take it easy for a while.

ya that link posted it already covered this..but i believe nice and slow but if its a "brand new" engine I hear that you can get the seals to seal up tighter if you push the engine a bit harder the first time around so that the seals will heat up fast and then cool down faster so the seal is tighter. My 2 cents.. onthe theory
