What's the best cheap tranny fluid?
i'm rebuilding my engine, but i'm not gonna have the money to rebuild my tranny for another 3 months. i have to get my car running, as i can't go without the car for 3 months, so what kind of tranny fluid should I use in the mean time? I won't be racing, just some spirited street driving every here and there. I'm going to eventually go with GM Synchromesh Friction Modified, as that's what I have sitting in the garage right now, but that stuff is waaaay too expensive to use for just 3 months. Any cheap suggestions that won't hurt my tranny would be great. Thanks!
Pennzoil synchromesh is good stuff. I just put it in my s4c trans and it feels a little smoother than honda mtf, and cold weather shifting feels great
It is about $4 a quart too, but if you cant find that, honda mtf isnt all that expensive.

5w30 will allow the gears to run with less friction, so why not?
dangsr...what do you think honda mtl is? it is 10w30 with 2 ounces of friction modifier added to it.

news flash for ya two k si, mobil makes oil other than synthetic. they make a blend, and conventional oil. but you are right about the synthetic, and its non-use in the transmission.

I'm pretty sure he knew that. The "Mobil" designation is used for conventional oil and "Mobil 1" for Synthetic as I recall.

I like Honda MTF, GM syncro and Pennzoil Syncro(same stuff).</TD></TR></TABLE>
I've always used Honda MTF. Only $3.85 per quart List. I get extra employee discount. The only other one I would use is the GM Synchromesh.
Those that have been using conventionaly oil, do you change it out more often?

If your rebuilding, why not wait until you can get the money for both the motor and tranny. Then you wouldn't have to spend money on cheap tranny fluid. Plus are you doing the job yourself? If not... you are going to spend more than you expected for labor... especially when that tranny is pulled again, assembled and put back in.
all being done myself, and as stated above, I can't go without my car for the 3 months that it would take to get the money for the tranny.
thanks everyone for your input, as I think i'm just gonna go Honda MTF, since it's not that expensive.

have any of you gm syncromech users stopped to think why you love it so much? you can dump a quart of that crap into a tranny grinding every gear, and it will make the sound disappear. but how does it quiet the transmission down? its thickness; its ability to absorb impact and deaden sounds. due to this "thickness" you lose mechanical efficiency through your transmission. so every time you pour some of that gm shitsomesh into your transmission, just remember you are taking power away from your engine.
honda mtl is good stuff, but id rather go with plain jane valvoline 0w30 motor oil with redline friction modifier.

IMO, Honda. And the Honda fluid is not $5 a quart. Hell you can get Penzoil syncromesh for about $4 a quart.
I have NEVER had good results with 10w30 motoroil.

I'm not talking crap, but do you have any proof? I figure since it is used by an OEM manufacturor that they wouldn't use it if it was junk. I'm open to be persuaded.

Actually, the viscosity of pennzoil/GM synchromesh was recentley posted in the ITR or roadracing forum. It is actually a little thinner than Honda MTF. Stop trying to sound like you are an expert on mission fluid. When i find the post with the visc. info i will post it. Okay i found it.
OEM Honda Visc@100C - 11.26
Redline MT-90 Visc@100C - 14.3
Redline MTL Visc@100C - 11.2
Motul Gear 300 Visc@100C - 15.2
Pennzoil Synchromesh Visc@100C - 9.08
Thanks to RJ for the info.
As you can see, the pennz fluid is thinner than Honda MTF, so it can not absorb any more impact than the honda stuff, and it most certainly cannot absorb more sounds and bog down performance because of its thickness. It is simply a better fluid than honda MTF IMHO.
