Default Trying to figure out the bugs with my recent swap

I just put a d16z6 motor in my 90 civic. The car runs fine but when you go to take off from 700-2000 rpms it sputters and has a really hard time going. Once you get above 2000 the car runs fine and the the vtech comes in fine around 4k. I was just wondering what this could be. I am alittle new to the honda scene. The two things i was told is that it could be my stock tranny holding it back and to switch to an si or the cam timing being off. Thx

the tranny should'nt make it sputter or bog down. could be timing. could be the fuel system or dist. going out.
