i heard it was very hot.
maybe 1 or both were running big cams?
i can't see either of those two guys misshifting.

Not a very happy weekend for the Special Projects Team. I feel bad for Shawn, he has put so much effort into making the #65 car a top contender, No detail is ever overlooked, Every precaution was taken to try and make these engines fast and reliable, and within the rules. To have this happen in a warm up session is very depressing!
The rod in our K-20 Broke at about 6500 when Shawn downshifted from 4th. to 3rd. after the Esses going into the sweeper? I think thats correct shawn? Completely unexpected... And then Andy Hope had the same thing happen with a missed shift a couple of minutes later!!!
We expect these things to happen, it's racing! And racing is expensive. If we couldnt afford to run in H1 we wouldnt do it! But it's a pain in the *** when it doesent need to happen! Or could have been avoided if the rule makers had listened to people who know what they were talking about! We have been hamering NASA about the Rods being the weak link in the K-20's from Day 1!
At least Two teams now have the NASA rule makers to thank for saving us all that money by not allowing us to fit a set of $600-$800 After Market Rods!
So now instead of spending $800 extra when we built our new motors in the first place...now we can go ahead and spend another $5000 or $6000 on repairs!
Really clever forward thinking guys!!!
Perhaps it's just me... But I can't see how that keeps the cost of racing down?
I guess this will start another $$$ war between the Budget Cone dodgers and the real racers who are capable of spending money wisely.

Actually KIWI it was at the entrance to the Esses that I was upshifting from 3 to 4. The motor broke some time after the clutch was depressed and I never go to get on the power in 4th gear. I coasted thru the rest of the Esses past the cones and Jumped out of my pea soup white filled smoked interior with the fire extinguisher hoping it was a fire and not a hole in the block. Unfortunately oil all over the firewall told me it was a hole in the block and all the smoke was the oil hitting the Comptech Stainless (now stained) header.
This was for sure in no way a miss shift or driver error. I was not furious, just a little depressed that my weekend was over so soon. I was also fighting a cold that weekend as well so everything was just going downhill...and then my teammates car had its own issues.

Wow,
that sucks guys. This make me doubt my move to have a K20 in my engine bay. Though, Varo's car seem to be holding pretty good. Is it because the case of built engine Vs. Stock engine?

the yellow hondata car seems to be holding up pretty well also.
man, this is crazy news!

Sorry, my mistake. Yes I remember you were parked at the end of the esses when I came by... I never thought for a second that the motor had blown! I thought it was just another wiring fault or one of theose stupid glitches.
Absolutely no question of driver error or missed shifts. Just one of those things.
Don's working on the remedy's and a replacement engine as we speak. Looks like I'm getting my K-20 for Mid Ohio as well?
We'll be back!

Both K20 engines lost rods. Varo's and my engine are still running OK, but I'm a little worried about how long that will last. The cheapest after market rod is still significantly better than stock, and I'm in favor of allowing aftermarket rods in H1.
On Saturday Tom Lang was the fastest, with Ryan and Bernardo chasing hard at his heels. Unfortunately both Tom and Bernardo overheated during the race and had to slow down or pull in. Varo started at the back of the grid due to a yellow flag incident while qualifying, and came through the field to finish just behind me in 3rd place. My fuel pump started to fail about half way through the race but the fuel pressure only really dropped on the last lap or so.
For Sunday Shawn allowed me to use his fuel pump from #65, which fixed my fuel pressure problem. I got a decent qualifying session in and managed a low 2:03 lap to get 2nd on the grid. Both myself and Robert got poor starts, smoking the tires big time. We tried to go three wide on turn 1 so I ended up taking the dirt option, but no big deal. Then we got to magic mountain, I had a big spin off into the dirt. Reviewing the video it appears that I got a little sideways, which is no big deal, but then the steering wheel spins through my hands to full lock, which spun the car. I guess I have to use velcro gloves or something. After the spin I was cruising on my own so someone else will have to take up the commentary for the race.
An interesting comparison to last year on the same track with the B motor is that I was only 0.7 s faster with the K, despite better aerodynamics and better suspension setup. That extra weight is killing me, but the K is the way to go.
Derek.

Derek.
We may be experiencing what King Motorsports had been experiencing in blowing up the K motors. It is undetermined if the rod failed in the Special Projects car due to lack of oil at the rod bearing. I will tear into it this week. From the looks of Hopes rod, there seemed to be a lot of heat building up at the bearing side, so that motor may have blown due to the bearing seizing at the high revs it saw when/if he miss shifted.
Word is that Varo has non OEM rods in his K motor (dont quote me boy i aint said sh:t) and I guess that his motor is holding up due to his improvements.
The hondata car on the other hand...is a sitting duck unless Derek tears it down to inspect the bearings...hopefully that motor wont blow!

No missed shift reported on our Team???
Good luck with your K-20? When you've done as much research as we have perhaps you'll think again?

what word?
motor is 100% built in H1 spec... the stock rods can handle the stock power that Varo's motor puts out
