Just wondering if the heater core is in relation with the a/c in the car... How does this work?

Air flows thru the AC evaporator first, then thru the heater core. So if you have the AC & heat both turned on, it cools the air then heats it back up. If it's raining or if it's really damp, this is like a dehumidifier to dry the air. If you don't need to dehumidify the air, then it's just a waste where the AC & heat are working against each other.
