knock detection tools/sensors for tuning
Ok so I recently bought a wideband and im starting to tune some of my friends cars and soon my own, problem is till now i've only done n/a cars, but with FI im weary of detonation/blowing motors with too lean conditions...
soo I'm wondering what kind of knock detection tools there are other than factory knock sensors which I hear are useless after 5-6K rpm due to excess miscellaneous engine noise
I also know about the J&S safeguard.
Just wondering if there are any other fine tuned knock sensors out there...i've seen this one from hks but the price is scary

are there any types of stethoscopes that let u hear?
i like the j&s except its a lot of wiring, im looking for mobility to use it from car to car, and i dont necessarily need something to automatically retard timing when all i really need to know is if its knocking or not since i'll be in the middle of tuning a car anyway, i can just re-do the ignition/fuel settings and listen again

Well you can buy a mechanic's stethoscope from most any auto store; it's just like a normal stethoscope just w/ a long rod on the end. You stick it to the block or the head and it lets you hear knocking.
The only thing is I don't think you could use it while the motor is under load, only when it's idling......so for detonation, it might not be the best thing to use.

Put an ear inside your engine.
Protect your powerplant from harmful detonation with MSD's Engine Knock Alert system. A knock sensor is installed into an engine block drain or access hole, and relays excessive detonation to a dash mounted controller unit. The sensor is tunable to the noise pattern of your engine, so you know if there's excess detonation right away. The system comes complete with the sensor, adapter and controller, and is compatible with four, six or eight cylinder engines with 12 volt electrical systems.
Sold individually.
142 OR SO AT SUMMIT
HMM I HAVE TO GO CHECK MY BLOCK AND SEE IF THERE'S A NICE EASY PLACE TO PLUG THIS IN
ANYONE KNOW HOW "EFFECTIVE" THE LOCATION FOR THE STOCK KNOCK SENSOR IS?

I think the stock knock sensor's location is the best place for it.
What all do you have done?
I know that on fully built Honda motors, they usually cancel out the stock knock sensor in the standalone computer b/c the forged internals and the clearances used make the motor much more "noisy", and the knock sensor will start pulling timing even though there is not detonation.
Just FYI.

its not really for me, a product like the one im looking for might not even exist, i just need something to listen/detect knock and let me know and maybe even datalog when/where it was... it would be used on any car that i was asked to tune for my friends...nissans...na and tubro hondas... etc
