Type R oil cooler install in a 2001 GSR ? yes I searched
I have a couple of questions about installing a Type R stock oil cooler in a 2001 GSR: is the block predrilled for the coolant line from the cooler? will it fit with the manifold brace attached? do I have to take the manifold brace off the remove the thermostat housing? I have searched and tried to look but there is not a lot of room or good sight lines to see eveything.
Thanks

Water is taken from the water pipe that runs between the thermostat housing and water pump so it can be retrofitted to your GS-r. Just need to swap out the water pipe and get youself the cooler and hoses. Get the factory hoses since these are molded with a tight bend in the already. Pics of the 1994 GS-r which came with the cooler stock.
Removing the manifold brace shouldn't be impossible. I think if you plan on doing it, you should have as much working space as possble. If it were me, I'd remove it.
The coolant has to be drained and the thermostat housing has to be removed so that you can pull the water pipe out to that side.
The blocks without oil coolers aren't drilled and tapped for that coolant return nipple that runs through an oil drain galley. You have to strip the entire block to do that properly.
Another alternative is to find another pathway for the coolant to return to the block. I suggest tee'ing it into the heater hose coming off the side of the head.
If you really want to try it, I've got an oil cooler for cheap and some of the coolant hoses too. Then you'll need the '94-'95 GS-R water pipe, or you can switch both the thermostat housing and water pipe to ITR or B16 (w/ oil cooler) pieces.

You don't need to "strip" the whole block to drill & tap it.
Just drill and tap it, pull the drain plug in your block and flush your water system with a lot of water... all the metal filings will come out.

I purchased a used '98 Gs-r block and it didn't have the oil cooler on the back of the block. I already had a factory one from my b17a, so I used my Haynes manual and it gives step-by-step intructions on how to do it. Just make sure you install all gaskets, otherwise it will leak like hell. HTH!
That's right....you don't need to strip to drill and tap it, but the proper method of doing it should follow a clean protocol.
I highly doubt all of the metal shavings will stay in solution with the coolant.
You have your way and I have mine.

Which is why I suggested an alternate way to route the coolant line so that people don't have to tear down the entire engine.
