to anyone who thinks large subs are sloppy, listen to the B&W ASW 850 which is a 15" driver or the wilson XS which is a dual 18" driver. they will blow you away.

while i DO agree with you
i want to point oput that the SAME MODEL SUB thAT SOUNDS 'TIGHT' IN TEN INCH OR TWELVE INCH MODELS will SOUND JUST AS GOOD IN 15 OR 18 INCH MODEL
for example a 12 inch comp vr sounds good, so does a 15 or 18
a 12 inch jl audio w3 sounds goopd, the 18 sounds even better!

There was a thread from over a year ago where we discussed transient response of large subs(15"+). Dan Wiggins registered and made a couple of posts in the thread. I will post a link if I can find it.

People should actually try out their 12 inch Shiva subs. The Shiva was originally a home-theater sub, but made to work with car audio. It's much cheaper than most of the popular brands out, but some other audiophile boards recommend it.
the shiva doesnt need a large enclosure unless you are using it in a home theater application. the Shiva is just AMAZING. i have loved every second that i have owned it. i built the box for it and everything, simply pounds, and is hands down the most pleasant sounding 12" i have ever heard. i couldnt imagine it in a vented box, it would hurt so bad to listen to!!
Without reading it I can tell you that as long as the correct motor is used to the correct cone you wont end up with a "slower" woofer.
