Now I've gone and done it.
It would appear that I've gone and made a deal for a tow vehicle. Finally. Dammit.
Some of you know this vehicle well. Grey 1989 Econoline 7.3L 350 diesel formerly used by Walk Puckett, and before that his dad. Been sitting in front of his shop unloved for a few years now.
Should become mine by late next week.

Wow, 1.50 is pretty cheap for diesel. 'Round here it's between 1.75 and 1.90. But just wait til you find out you can run your diesel on french fry oil. How does free fuel sound?

I just ran across the boarder (into SC) for gas for the daily driver ($1.82 .vs $1.96) and diesel was $1.54. It's always cheaper a few exits down from there.

Don't know if I want to race, but I damn sure know I don't want to be in that car for more than an hour at a constant 75mph ever again.
I'll snap some pictures next week.

Diesel buying tip - don't get it at a standard gas station. They tend to be more expensive, and sell less of the stuff (freshness actually does count with diesel) than...Truck stops. Even here in NC right off I-40 I fueled a few weeks ago for 1.59 a gallon.
I told Matt last night that the first time you pull the car off the trailer and realize that you're DONE with setup, is a wonderful feeling.

Yeah. I remember that feeling.
Now I have a car that runs on 225/45/13 tires and won't get up on the damned trailer with said tires mounted on the car. So I'm actually back to changing tires (205/60/13) to get the car on and off the trailer.
<sigh>
The bright side is that it always gets trailered on cold tires, thus never peeling the paint off my pimpy black diamond plate deck. The 205 tires on the freebie steelies also make excellent canopy anchors.
Yeah... The bright side.

Glad you saw the light and came over to Diesel power.
Now about that ITA Sentra.........
Shultz left out the best part about truck stops. When fueling at the "rig" pumps, the flow rate of the pumps is MUCH faster than the regular car pumps. Comes in handy filling up the 44 gallon tank on the Excursion. And just in case you're wondering, the HUGE tank kicks ***. The last time I raced at Road Atlanta I TOWED from Morrisville (near Raleigh) to Road Atlanta, unloaded, drove to the hotel, drove back to the track, then drove around getting my buddies registration woes corrected for about an hour at the track, and THEN filled the big bitch back up.
As for loading and unloading, I don't HAVE to changed wheels, but I often do, AND I have to remove the front body work (the entire nose) to get it in the trailer. Luckily the front bodywork is 6 latches and about 30 seconds.
Oh to have a purpose built race car.
-Matt
PS - Before all you IT guys get bent out of shape, by purpose built, I mean a chassis that was never, ever, intended to be anything but a race car. I think the Radical qualifies.

Yeah I remember that feeling too. (EDIT: Giles, at least you have crew to help, unlike some of us). Anyway, now it's...
1. Go get trailer out of storage
2. Take ramps off trailer
3. Take ramp extensions out of hatch of race car
4. Assemble
5. Remove front bumper skin/splitter assy. from race car if not already removed
6. Drive onto trailer
7. Climb out through window since I can't open the damn door
8. Tie car down
9. Go
10. Reassemble ramp fiasco per steps 2 through 4
11. Un-tie car
12. Climb in through window (with a window net this is a particularly good time BTW)
13. Back off trailer
14. Re-attach bumper skin and splitter
15. Rework brake ducts with lots of zip ties and swearing
Car is now, hopefully, ready.
16. Weeks later, make considerable payment on Excursion
I dunno Nicholson, sometimes driving the car to the track looks pretty okay to me.
As to Graham... :middlefinger:

Well, there is an appeal to being "the fastest car driven to the track", but I figure since Brian Marks drives his Z06 to the track there no chance of that for me
I *WILL NOT* own a trailer that I cannot simply drive off and be ready to go. There's no reason in towing of you can't do that.

When i got my trailer for the CRX i just made more work..I store my auto-x tires in bags, etc..so now in addition to changing tires and setting shocks still, I have to load and unload..
Meanwhile when I race the SSC Neon i drive it to the track w/tires in the back, change them at the track and go racing..I did this at Roebling Road, Road Atlanta, and CMP last year.
Trailering a stock class Autocross car and driving a roadrace car to the track..go figure.
The FC is a different story...it actually seems like less labor than the two street cars.
Matt, you going to Barber? (supps/schedule/entry form hit the web in the last 24 hours if you are)

I actually hope I do NOT work on the race car much more.
Update: The van is mine. It's in my driveway. Goddam its big. I mean, Karl's Excursion has nothing on me. I cannot clean the front window without standing on the front bumper, and even then it's just barely. I am NOT a short man (6'3")
I will photogrpah it shortly and have a "name Matt's tow vehicle" contest.
Now...where to get a trailer.....

It's your shocks. 400/400 and DA Konis... and my ride is barely worse than stock springs and AGXs. I was quite surprised. A loud exhaust does suck, even driving a Supertrapp(not mine) to the grocery store is annoying.
Congrats on the ride!! Is red velor carpet the next step?

Wow, I just saw this. Congrats Matt!
Imagine Karl actually taking his car somewhere on his trailer. That's funny...

Matt-
Check out Kraftsman in Ramseur, they build their own trailers and they seemed pretty nice. The prices weren't bad either. They were also willing to do any customizing (tire racks, tool boxes, etc) you might want. They've got a billboard up somewhere around here (maybe 40/85 between GSO and Burlington), if I can find the number I'll get it to you. BTW, congrats! I love the feeling of pulling the car onto the trailer, cranking up the tow vehicle, turning on the air and stereo, and setting the cruise control for the ride home. Beats the hell out of the Civic!
