WCBS-TV reported that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was an American Airlines 767 presumably on approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The station showed pictures of a huge plume of smoke.

CNN:
NEW YORK (CNN) -- An American Airlines jet crashed Monday on takeoff from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The plane went down in the Rockways section of the New York City borough of Queens.
CNN confirmed the plane was American Airlines Flight 587 from New York to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The plane was a Boeing Airbus A300. American Airlines did not immediately release the number of passengers on the flight. The A300 can accommodate up to 266 passengers, according to Boeing's Web site
At least four houses were on fire, and a huge plume of smoke could be seen rising from the site.
All three New York City-area airports -- Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark -- closed after the crash. Mayor Rudy Giuliani declared a Level One emergency, mobilizing all available police, fire and emergency personnel.
FoxNews:
NEW YORK — An American Airlines jet has crashed in Queens, N.Y., sending a plume of smoke into the sky over the New York City borough.
The FAA identified the flight as American Airlines Flight 587, an Airbus A300 that took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport and was headed to Santo Domingo.
The plane crashed shortly after 9 a.m. There is no word yet on how many people were on board.
Several buildings are reportedly on fire in the borough's Rockaway section, which is close to Kennedy Airport.
WINS Radio reported that a witness said there was an explosion, and then the plane plummeted to the ground.
Queens, one of New York City's five boroughs, is home to both Kennedy and La Guardia Airports. Those airports, along with Newark International Airport in Newark, N.J., have been closed.
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has cancelled his morning schedule and is heading to the scene of the crash.

243 on board and most likely all dead. Estimated 12 buildings on fire. It in a residential community, houses are on fire. Reports suggest that there was an explosion. No terrorist relations yet.
Nobody knows the cause of the crash. I worked as a field service Engineer in the airline industry and I've seen some things that may scare the regular public. Security prior to 9/11 at JFK was so laxed it was ridiculous. I know they've stepped up in security since then, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to walk up to a plane on the tarmac place something on the plane and walk away.
Houses are on fire btw. A witness is saying that an explosion near the engine caused the wing to come off causing the plane to downward plunge

probably not a terrorist attack, they're saying (eyewitness accounts) that the engine was on fire, apparently that engine seperated from the wing and landed 4 blocks from where the plane crashed. that doesn't sound like the work of anything but a mechanical failure....and the plane's desitnation implies fewer american passengers, so it's probably not a terrorist attack (again, just conjecture, who knows.)
You guys realize its Veterans Day also. Does that have significance? Who knows? I just pray that alot of people are ok b/c my girlfriends Dad a fireman in Rockaway.
Yeah thats sad, the plane was enroute to the Dominican Replublic.
I hope nobody that I know was on the plane though. It landed near my old friends neighborhood.
