Default 88-89 Tach Cluster

Ok my friend let me borrow his cluster from his 89 CRX(its automatic). We put it in my car it doesn't work, we put it back in the CRX it works, back in my car didn't work. I drive a 89 Civic DX standard. Do the automatic gauge cluster not work in a standard car? I heard you can get a cluster from an auto 88-89 4 door and it would work, is this true? The CRX one didn't work what would make that one work? Need help. Which tach clusters work? (yes I did search)

naw, if you can find the post on it, to know where the wires go ,its very easy to swap the pins and extend one wire. ill look for the post also.

here you can use this for pin placement this is what i used. i only used the info for the 89 https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=709958

he is talking about putting a auto cluster (same years) into his CRX w/ a 5 speed. It should work. I have a '90 auto cluster w/ tach in my '91 hatch w/ manual tranny. It works fine. Although I had to get used to the 'prdn**' on the cluster. Now I don't even notice its there.

he drives an 89 civic and the cluster is from an 89 crx and they are different. auto or not he still has to change the pins to make it work. i know exactly what your saying 90-91 are all the same. 89 civic and crx differ. i beleive it has to do w/ the seat belts in the door ie: newer style wiring.

the auto works the same as non auto.

so from most replies are saying........ the clusters should be a "Plug and play" sort of deal right? that's if you keep within the 88/89 and 90/91 range...

I tried switching to a cluster with a tach 'cause I didn't have one before - should this matter even though my car is 91 and the cluster is 91? The tach isn't working, everything else is.
