Default 89 CRX Si

Ok... This is my first post on here. I am not extremely knowledgable about electrical components. Let me first give you a background of what happened and maybe someone can help me come to a conclusion.
My car has been broken into 3 times and in the process some of the idiots broke some of the plastics behind the center console and knocked my glove compartment off. Basically, trashed the inside of my car.
The other day, I got in my car (89 CRX Si) and my knee bumped the steering column with my knee. The plastic on it just fell to the floor! Then when I started driving and hit the first stop sign and when I hit the brake pedal, my seat belt light and beep went on through it's whole cycle. This continued every single time I hit the brakes.
When I got home that night and had time to take a better look at the car, I noticed that the plastic piece on the driver's side (outside) was missing. (Just to clear it up, the piece that is between the window and the door jamb so to speak.)
I am thinking that someone tried to get into my car and hot wire it or something and ended up just screwing things up. Is there something simple that I could have bumped under the streering column that caused this or, is this something that would had to have been done intentionally? Please, any help you can give would be appreciated greatly! Thanks in advance!
