Bad clutch or stripped gears?

Within the past week my car has sometimes seemed hesitant. When I'm driving, it seems like it's not "picking up" like normal. A few moments later the car seems to catch up with itself. I can feel a slight surge when this happens. I assumed it was a slipping clutch. It only happens when the car is cold.
Tonight I cleaned my air filter. I reinstalled it and drove around the block. I was approaching the last turn to my house in 4th gear. I braked and clutched in and moved the shifter to neutral. However, the shifter was stuck and each time I pushed towards neutral (with the clutch pedal in) I felt a vibration in both the shifter and the pedal. I finally got the shifter in neutral as I coasted down the street. I clutched in again and could not get the car in gear. I pulled over to the side and turned off the car. I waited a minute while calling my bro to pick me up.
He shows up and I start the car. I put it in first and attempted to pull out onto the street. As I speed up in first I hear a banging "metal hitting metal" noise. I eased off the throttle and clutched in and went to neutral. I tried putting it in first and all I got was more crunching noise.
I put it in first again and creeped along around 10mph. The rpm was a steady 2000 in first gear. However, the car was speeding up and slowing down repeatedly. I assumed it was the clutch alternating between grabbing and slipping.
However, my bro, who was in his car behind me said that the crunching noise sounded like gears at the point of having the teeth stripped.
Your opinions?
What's the typical cost for
Clutch replacement?
Transmission replacement?
Thanks!

Sounds like the springs in the clutch plate have fallen out. It happened to my buddies 95 Civic EX, and it did the exact same thing and sounded the exact same. With the car parked it seemed to stick in gear, then once it broke free it would move around freely. Once we started it and tried to move, it sounded exactly like you describe it. His transmission was fine and I think your woill be to. More than likely you just need a clutch. You can buy a clutch kit with the clutch, preasure plate and throw out bearing from advance I think for less than $200. Hope this is helpfull to you

Yup, that's what it does, but not as much since I was limping home in 1st gear at less than 25mph.
