thanks. at least someone does. oh, i beat every car at the local autocross with 1 greyteg's relatively stock itr this past weekend. that includes a slew of solo 2 national champions. woohoo! next year, pro solo2 here i come.........

I got you im btw, but I can't reply back because you have that option disabled!
Well I say go ahead and do it. If you change it out it will help accleration and by getting the GSR 5th gear you will be close to a stock type R in 5th at highway speeds. The more you mod the R the more the gearing should help out as well I believe.

i have also thought about performing this mod as well, but im afraid that i might "run out" of 3 or 4 gear on the track. on the few tracks that i have been to, at certain sections im pretty much at the end of 3rd and 4th would be too much and not needed...so if i did get the higher fd, i would most likely be in the beginning of 4th at those times that i would usually be in 3rd. does that make sense? im still a novice but would like to hear other comments.

Can't have it both ways - either people will ask the same questions over and over again witout searching, or they will search and bring back old threads when they need clarification...

I am in the same boat - I have heard how incredible the ATS FD is, but on the tracks I run the front straight is borderline 3rd gear already - so with the FD I would need to shift for sure into 4th. The real determining factor would be lap times. Does the benefit outweigh the reduction in speed due to the shift...

And that is the big problem... hard to tell unless someone tests back-to-back stock vs ATS FD on the same track with some reasonably accurate data acquisition (i.e., a dependable lap timer!).

Hmmmm... I have been thinking about picking up the ATS FD next winter sometime. I'm very consistent my recording of data every time I go to the track (weather conditions, suspension settings, tires, etc) and now that I have a lap timer I will always be recording that data as well.
I'll be sure to remember to post up before and after analysis of lap times and conditions when I do this mod.
On a side note - now that I have the lap timer, I will be sure to post before and after times for any future modification (new header, sway bar, etc.) - A real world dyno.

I would love to upgrade my FD, I just put way too many miles on my R to consider it.
<--Just thought of the 1,300 each way mile trip to Expo with the 4.9 FD

Ok, here's the best way to look at it when thinking of track driving and doing a higher FD especially as a novice:
First, No gearing is perfect for Every track.
Driving up one gear and intending to drive as such will actually promote you to drive faster and maintain momentum which is one of the things you should be working on anyway.
I won't lie, I have run out of gear in the middle of a corner, but the higher FD takes care of the lag feeling you have with your current gearing as long as you're in the sweet spot between 6K and redline.
I owe alot to Dave Bowlin showing me last season that I should be driving faster and up a gear anyway so that's pretty much my goal everywhere I drive now.
I only use 3rd at extreme tight turns or in traffic. I still use 3rd, 4th and 5th on the tracks I drive, never 2nd after leaving the pits. But I make a concentrated effort to keep in 4th and 5th and if my speed is not high enough this time round I adjust higher next lap.
I have yet to run out of gear in 5th but I'm sure the time will come as I progress and especially on faster courses. But there are ways to mend that too. I'm just not there yet.
People can argue gearing left and right and some may chime in still. It comes down to what you want and what works and feels right for you.

I think this topic got re-opened because str33tracer was apparently picking a fight with Rob (Bbasso) and posted to it. That post was deleted (either by str33tracer or by a moderator, I'm not sure which) but the topic remained on the list of recent topics as a result.
The shorter FD will be quicker at speeds where you will still be in the same gear, and slower at speeds which force an upshift to a higher gear than with the stock FD. To see which speeds these are, and how much of a gearing advantage you get at any particular speed, check out this old post.

While it definitely depends on the track layout(s) you're speaking about, my opinion is that it is the best mod I had done to my former car.
While experience can definitely lessen lap times, mine dropped dramatically after the installation of the 4.929. In nearly four years of roadracing, I considered it invaluable. Great mod. I'd recommend it before anything else, especially if you're not concerned with gas mileage/revs on the highway.
I have no experience in regards to replacing the LSD. The stock part worked great for me.
Good luck.

Yes, that fool bumped the thread earlier today, then deleted the post so he could post more spewage in another thread when he hit his 5 post per day limit.
