What does 483hp feel like? kinda long.
So, I was in a friend's restaurant earlier today, talking cars with him and an older customer. The guy seems to be looking for something cheap and fast, so I told him to take my ITR out for a spin. He says, "No, that's a kid's car." So I ask him what he drives. "A Porsche GT2," he replies. My friend knows this guy pretty well, so I told him I'd love a ride sometime. He says, "Let's go right now."
So he leaves, and I'm pretty much dumbfounded, wondering whether or not this is going to happen. 5 minutes later, a gunmetal gray GT2 pulls up outside. So I hop in as my other friends gawk helplessly.
We head out to the web of highway on-and off-ramps near the Kennedy Center (for you Metro area folks) and he proceeds to get on it. I squawked out loud and grabbed the door handle for dear life. He takes two passes, since the highway in question provides an opportunity for inspired hotshoes to make continuous loops across the median. He pulls into a gas station after the second pass, and says "OK, your turn."
For those who don't know, this car makes 483 peak hp @5700.
Torque is 472@3500-4500.
No 4WD, no traction control. I am sweating like a pig in heat when I get into the car. Luckily no stalling, the clutch is pretty civilized.
I take it easy on my first pass, then on the second, I let the pavement have it. From 2-4K rpm, the car builds momentum steadily, then at around 4500 it's like you've turned on the afterburners. I've never gobbled up a road this quickly in my entire life. It was so quick that you cannot pause to look down at the poorly-laid out gauges to see how fast you are going, or how hard the engine is working. It's a hell of a lot quieter than my ITR, but it makes a nice metallic growl as it goes.
It actually surprised me with its docility. I have heard that this car is an out-of-control monster waiting to swap ends, but I saw no evidence of this behavior. I redlined 1st through 3rd gears, then I ran out of highway. I tossed it through long sweepers and bends at more than 100mph and never felt in danger.
I got about 40 minutes behind the wheel of this monster and it was pretty awesome. Afterwards, we hopped in my ITR (which was just washed for the first time in two years - no lie), and it felt like I was towing a boat behind it as I ripped through the gears. I thought something was wrong with the car, and then I just realized I'd been driving a 12-second machine in anger.
This might sound crazy, but just as the GT2 made my ITR feel slow, it also made it feel incredibly nimble, especially where braking is concerned. After driving both cars back-to-back, the GT2 owner and I agreed that the brakes on my ITR (half-dead Carbotech XPs on rotors that George Knighton threw away) were far superior to the $6,000 braking system on the Porsche. He stomped on the brakes as if he were driving the GT2, and we almost came to a complete stop on one of the ramps. Needless to say, he stopped calling it a kid's car after that.
Cliff Notes: Total stranger lets me beat the crap out of his 483-hp 911 GT2, then realizes that a $25,000 Honda can outbrake him. It was an awesome day.

Thanks for the nice little bit of vicarious living.

Too late. Were any of those Porsches at Slummit GT2s? You wouldn't have caught me in this thing, Gramps.
Up until this point, the fastest cars I'd ever driven were my ITR and my Mom's Mustang GT. This was just another planet.

Those Carbon-on-Carbon brakes on the GT2 probably work better when sufficiently heated up stopping from its top speed.

There is nothing on this earth like a Porsche, and especially nothing like a GT-2! Wow, that is truly an amazing experience. I've got a 1979 930 (911 Turbo) that is insanely fast, I can't even imagine what that GT-2 feels like.
Wow I wish I were in your shoes!
BTW, those who own a Porsche call them "Pour-scha"

Carbon on Carbon?
Isn't it more Carbon-on-Ceramic brakes?
Also, I thought the '02 996 GT2 made 462 hp and 476 ft.lbs. of torque.:shrugs:
Ross is da' man!

Total stranger, that's awesome....
Fastest car I've ever driven.... is between Zyg's 97-236 (RIP) and a Kenny Bell supercharged 5.0.... No need to say which had better brakes....
Thanks again Ed.

PCCB - Porsche Ceramic Composite Braking system.
The GT2 is wickid fast, got to ride in one last year. Just wait until you have the chance to drive a GT3... NA power at its best.
I got scared shitless, couldn't muster up the ***** to take it to redline.

Wow, tell this guy he can flog my NSX on the GW Parkway while I take a spin in the GT2 anytime he wants. If he owns that thing, my car would probably be considered "cheap" in his eyes, so it may be what he is looking for. I am very jealous, I would settle for shotgun in one of those things.

indeed.
500hp 2800lb rx7 will run 10s.
if chassis is setup it will be faster than gt2 at everything except maybe top speed which will still be close to 200mph. fully built is around $30k including the base car.
you heard it here first.

Oh man, please don't go into the "well you can build THIS to be faster, so HA!" crap. Ross had a kick *** opportunity, let him bask in the glow. I'd be beaming if I'd had a similar chance to drive a "base" model Carrera or something; whether it's the fastest car on the road or not doesn't matter.

That's all well and good when they drive a 1/4 mile at a time and come in on a trailer, but with upgrades and when street driven the motors are lucky if they make it to 50K miles (friend of mine just put in his 3rd motor in his R1).
