The agony, the exstacy, the broken axles...
Anyway here are pics from 2004. As expected the car had teething problems. However when it ran (and when the organizers didn't **** things up) it was very, very fast...

I wasn't at competition, had to work...
Lehigh finished 103rd or something like that. Most of it was due to the newness of the design and also some lack of preparation, but basically the car did not compete in any dynamic event. I was extremely pissed with the handling of the autocross, which is the one event Lehigh really got screwed on. I really wanted to see the car put down ONE stinking lap and prove that the car had the performance to back up the weight statistics.
Most of the 'featherweight' cars have been poor performers, and were still heavier than us...

a lot of teams got screwed with the autox. about 20 or so cars were able to run before it started raining. after the rain cleared (we're talking flash flood down pour rain, not drizzle) they reopened the autox. all of the teams that missed the opportunity to run in the dry had to run in the wet.
add to that the fact that EDS, the people running timing and scoring, fucked a bunch of things up, and we were all left feeling pretty bitter about the whole ordeal.
personally, i think the whole rainout part wasnt handled that badly. Every team had access to the same weather services, and as a result, could have made the call as to run early, or gamble with the weather and run late. We knew that bad weather was coming so we made sure we were the among the first to run. We did, however, get screwed by T&S. SCCA was the organization doing the course work and announcing times, and they had us in 3rd at the end of the day. EDS, however, said that we coned out every single run, and were OC for at least one. This was simply not true, but we could not prove them wrong. When we confronted them and asked for a printout of what their computers showed, they refused and basically implied that we were trying to lie our way to a better finish. A few other teams had similar problems and were, for the most part, equally unsuccessful.
typical FSAE drama, but there is always next year to get our revenge

The team did not have the money for two sets of wheels, so in the event of rain the slicks had to be removed and the rain tires mounted on the same wheels. That afternoon, the autocross starts staging cars. The course is initially dry and a number of teams run with slicks. Then the rain comes. They actually stopped the event completely for a while because of a tornado warning. Then the course was declared wet (slicks prohibited) and started staging cars.
The team was prepared for this contingency and was FIRST in line at the Hoosier truck to get the wheels changed over. They refused, saying because of the delay they had closed early for the day. I would like at this point to mention that
1) They mounted the tires in about 10 minutes the next day, so it would not have been much trouble
2) We spent at least $1500 on tires from them that year ($500 out of my pocket)
The Goodyear guys, to their credit, tried to mount them but could not because of our unusual bolt pattern. The team drove across half the county but every garage they tried either could not or would not mount them.
At this point the course was dried out, and they pleaded with the officials to let the car run on dry tires - they would not allow it. I could understand this if every car that competed ran on rains, but many teams had run on dry tires and their scores were not altered. So what is the ******* problem?
Finally Lehigh took the wheels apart and mounted the tires manually. The course was scheduled to run until 7pm - the car was ready at 6:45. Close call, right? Wrong. The autocross was closed early at 6:30. Again, despite pleading with officials, the car was not allowed to run.
We were not the only one to have problems. Several teams were penalized for cones they never hit. They even provided VIDEO evidence that their runs were clean and were ignored. I hate acting like a sore looser, but this sort of thing really leaves me with a bitter feeling. Lehigh's performance was not the fault of the organizers, but they sure didn't help...
Oh, and I don't think we'll be running Hoosiers next year either

Wow. Sorry to hear the event was organized so poorly.

lightest car i remember hearing about was penn state from a few years ago...i forget the exact number, but it was in the mid-300's... i remember them telling a honda guy (they used an F4 engine) that their car weighed less than the bike the engine came from...
nice work on 301. is <300 next year's goal???

I think the next lightest car was from a school in Wisconson a couple years back. It was an aluminum spaceframe and actually had a side mount engine (1 or 2 cylinder). I think it weighed around 350lb but I don't believe it performed very well.

There are no rising seniors this year so the team will be run by juniors. They'll get 2 shots running the team so if they're smart they will be conservative next year. The car will probably gain some weight - it is NOT a flimsy car but there are some areas that need to be beefed up.
The target weight for this car was 350 lbs. We were shocked when it was weighed for the first time in running trim at 281 lbs
