Effects of aftermarket steering wheel?
I am hesitant to get a new wheel b/c they dont have airbags. Im worried that perhaps the insurance company may have a problem with this and decline or raise my rates. Any ideas on this? I would like a smaller wheel since the stock one feels too bulky. Thanks
Just get a JDM ITR SRS steering wheel.
That way you will still be safe and you won't void your insurance claims.
They look really cool too.

Yeh I thought about those, but they look like the same size as the stock one we have?
too much. I want an actual racing (Momo, etc) wheel but it's not going to make me go any faster.
On another note, what is the difference in feel between aftermarket racing wheels and the stock steering wheel?
Are the smaller ones harder to turn? I have disconnected my power steering for the street, and I don't want it to be any worse, it is just bearable as it is...
I would think that the larger diameter, the easier it is to turn, but the more you have to turn it (movement wise-not in degrees).

I put the momo tornado on my prelude, to replace a blown airbag.
here are some things I've noticed:
#1 - it takes a bit to get used to it. You find yourself oversteering a little bit on the first day or two.
#2 - For some reason, it makes you want to drive with your hands at the 9 O'clock & 3 O'clock position

#3 - IT BLOCKS YOUR VISION OF THE FACTORY GAUGES. Something I had not considered before, but - because the steering wheel is a smaller diameter, it covers the factory gauges more then the stock one.
#4 - it is noticeably harder to turn at lower speeds
#5 - ITS VERY HARD TO WIRE THE BUTTONS PROPERLY. I tried to set up mine to the horn, but the wire would eventually get tangled in the steering column and tear. I have since moved my horn to another location, but unless you can figure out a way to make it move smoothly (I tried many times) you will loose your horn as well as your cruise control
#6 - it makes your care feel TOTALLY different - in a good way

good luck.
I don't know about the Insurance issues with an aftermarket wheel, but after having to lower my seat, and move it back far enough from keeping my head from hitting the cage, I'm now too far from the steering wheel for competition use, and I'm interested in a wheel with adapter that will extend the steering wheel toward me. I know this is a different issue, and I'll probably create my own thread sometime soon(maybe in the competition board), but I just thought I'd throw it out there.
for cornering the steering wheel can't be very small, chose a dished type wheel, just like my old OMP. it has 9cm depthness. right now i'm using a sparco Monza, it's not so deep but also great feeling on corners.
if you like straight roads than a smaller wheel is better.
here's my old OMP Corsica:

I went thur all the troble to get everthing legal. I got a letter stating I was sitting too close to the wheel which was very dangerous in an event of a accident, so me replacing the wheel was legal and the insurance had to except this fact. This was when I was living in Ontario, Canada.
I had a momo 300mm which was TOO SMALL!!
Now I have a 340mm steering wheel.
I would say the best would be a 350mm with a thicker rim. Like the momo Monte Carlo.
