I asked my mechanic about this and he said that it wont hurt the engine to drive wherever you need to, to replace it. everything should be ok

First off, how could you tell that by just changing your oil?
Second off, are you referring to the timing belt or the balance shaft belt?
If it's your timing belt, then the car wouldn't run and
your valves are probably toast.

i think hes referring to his balancer shaft belt, which is really no big deal and the noise you're probably hearing is from the belt getting stuck inbetween your pulleys down there, and like SKDRCR said, how could you tell it was broken by changing your oil? you do have your lower plastic covering your timing belt and your tensioners and things dont you?
it created a hole in the plastic cover and i saw a bunch of shredded pieces of the belt coming out

You should be ok without the balancer shaft belt, on the other hand, without it you should notice a pick up in acceleration. I would recommend getting those shreded pieces out of there to avoid any problems.
your balancer shafts keep the engine from Vibrating. You will have a very noticeable Vibration w/ no balancer shafts. you should pull out all foreign objects (belt chunks) from the Timing cover. Keep it out of high R's and get it fixed immediately.
I had this happen, and I jumped a tooth on the intake cam because the balancer belt got sucked between my timing belt and cam gear. I'm lucky.. No bent valves
