you are definitely not right about the frost white not having a clear coat. It does for sure since i just painted my lip and **** and my brother is a autobody technician. So you might wanna check who is telling you this :0

Well, I googled and yahooed. The majority of info I found says IT IS a clear coat.
But I also found a couple that said it wasn't.

from my understanding milano red is one of those weird ones, where the clear coat actually has color to it. so it's actually a primer then base coat, then a colored/tinted clear coat. the two colors combine to make milano red. thats why it fades so easily and when the clear wears it turns to a lovely pink.

According to http://www.paintscratch.com, Milano Red is a tricoat/clearcoat. It also shows that Frost White, Championship White, Taffeta White, and Phoenix Yellow are not clearcoated.

Does anyone here know what clearcoat is? I would be EXTREMELY pissed if I purchased a car that was not clearcoated. Without a clearcoat your paint would be very dull.

A) Because painting automobiles has been around ALOT longer than CC-ing them has.
B) CC is a relativly NEW process. 20 years old AT BEST.
C) MOST if not all pre-CC auto paint jobs are far more durable and superior to the CC paint jobs, and will look better for far longer.
D) CC is more a ECONOMICAL PROCESS, for auto manufacturers, than old auto paint methods, it IS NOT superior to them.

I remember reading/hearing that somewhere before too. Can't recall where though.
Clear coat or not, as long as you wash your car correctly, clay bar, polish, wax, etc the paint should still look good for years.

Ok heres the deal, go to a damn autobody shop and ask them to see a car that has been painted the base coat color (red, blue white etc.) and look at how the paint has NO luster or reflective ability. It is after the clear is applied OVER the base coat, that it will have its reflective properites.
I know because I took autobody just this last semester and my teacher has been painting for 30 years. It is true that some cars don't have a clear coat on them, car like your grandma's 58' caddy. Also there are some cheap paints like a brand called "concept" that have the clear "mixed" in with the base coat. I have talked to people that have used it and it is just used due to its ability to be applied easier without "running" it. I am absoutly positive that ALL hondas that were purchaced in the last 15 years were clearcoated. If there were not the paint would peel and fade in a matter of weeks and it would be dull as hell.
The peeling and fading the previous posters mentioned are due to the lack of proper care such as waxing. You can revive the paint by taking it to a detailer and having the paint buffed. This works by heating the clear a bit and basically filling in the tiny "grooves" and "valleys" and swirls in the clear. Either that or wet sand the clear off with 600-1000 and apply a fresh coat of clear.

EDIT: Just read all about tricoat/ milano red on paintscracth.com.
According to them. R-81 is 3 layer process. 1-pigment layer 2-transparent color layer/ or tinted clearcoat 3- clearcoat.
So I would say my previous info on R-81 WAS WRONG
Unless someone can show me otherwise. Also found this out:
ALL modern automotive paints REQUIRE a clearcoat, now.
Because environmental rules stipulate the way modern paints must be made.
So even if the original paint did not use a clearcoat a modern equivalent does.
Learn something new everyday. Apologies to everyone who said "you do need a clearcoat"

See, now this is what I had heard, and my rag turned reddish/ pink. So I assumed R-81 was not clear-coated. But it seems it has a RED TINTED mid-coat. And that could be what's turning the rag red.
