Painted red block code = replacement complete block
I have seen some blocks that have the stamping area painted red. My question is when it is painted red does it mean that this was not a production motor and it was bought from the dealer?
Yes, it means that it was a factory block bought from a dealer. They only came a complete bottom ends, ie. crank, rods and pistons. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys....first time I saw that was on a "stock" si at a honda dealer. It was in the used car lot and I saw it had that red on it but that the old owner painted it for some reason. Then I saw it again in that pic and I thought it actually meant something. Thanks for the info...

It doesnt mean that its bad...it just means that it didnt come in the car originally from factory and it was bought from the dealer. Its just good to know these things when you go buy a car. You will know exactly what to look for.

yes, or someone painted it
yes, or someone painted it
A close friend of mine had his block replaced from an Acura dealer and I don't remember him having that on his motor..
<--Calling him now to find out
I looked at mine and the actual numbers have red paint. It is a little faint but it is indeed red. What about that? I am pretty sure that my block is original though.
Holy **** my JDM ITR (96spec) also has red paint on the engine number, so i went out just now to take a closer look and guess what, the casting numbers on the head say '96' '12' which is means it was cast in december1996 and my car was first registered in japan in may 1996!!! I have done almost 5k miles in the car since i bought it and i couldnt figure out why it never burned a drop of oil no matter how hard i drove it, and i have had 9 other VTEC hondas and they all used oil to some extent, some more than others. I had also remarked when i first picked up the car that the block was immaculate and the rest of the engine bay was filthy but never gave it another moments thought after that...well now i know...Thanks H-T...i suppose its no bad thing, as i know my engine is a lot fresher than if it were in the car from the factory!! I seen above where it said that it only came as bottom end/crank/pistons etc so that possibly means my complete engine was replaced at some time!!!
