BACK TO RECALLS LIST

Summer 2002

Important Safety Recall: Ignition Switch

Dear Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey or Prelude Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

What is the reason for this notice?
Honda Motor Co., Ltd., has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in the ignition switch on certain 1997 thru 2000 Honda automobiles. Electrical contacts in the ignition switch can wear prematurely due to high electrical current passing through the switch. Worn out ignition contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning. Although the engine will restart in most cases, if your engine stalls while driving in traffic or at highway speeds, you're at risk of being involved in a crash. Difficulties starting the engine (for example, hard-to-start, stalls immediately after starting, etc.) may indicate that the ignition switch is failing.

What should you do?
Call any authorized Honda dealer, and make an appointment to have your vehicle repaired. The dealer will install an improved ignition switch, free of charge. Please plan to leave your vehicle at the dealership for half a day to allow the dealer flexibility in scheduling

This is hardly late breaking news here . . . . this recall notice went out a long freaking time ago . . .

But yeah, mine did it just once or twice over a 3 month period or so (just randomly stalled while on the highway), it'd be no good at all if you were in traffic when it happened. For a while it would only do it on longer road-trips (like 5 hours+), so I didn't bother getting it fixed. But then it started happening all the time, and it was pretty bad.

So just bring it in, it's a freebie & easy for the dealer to do. Takes them a half hour, tops. Just call ahead & make sure they have the part on hand.

Yeah that recall is like 2 years old. I went to the Honda site and punched in my VIN to find out my car wasn't on the recall list. If you bought the car first hand, you should of gotten a notice if you car was affected. If not, just bring it in for the hell of it, it's free.

Mine was defective... The car would shut off going down the road. A slight bump forward on the key would turn the car back on. It was also extremely hard to crank the car. If you turned the key to start and just let go of it, the car would die, so you had to start the car, and then SLOWLY turn the key back on the "ON" position

I had problems starting my car, when you turn the key *nothing*, but if you
do it a few times it will just start right up. I thought it was either a bad signal from
the key or the ignition switch. My car never shut off while driving but I had it fixed
over a year ago, still has the random starting problem.

heh, the point of the recall is to do it before you get problems. look at the poor guys in the old school 300zs with the fuel injection problem that would burn the car to the ground.

I remember I fucked mine up myself, and had to buy a new one which cost about $250 or so before the recall went out, but after I recieved my letter, I sent it to them, and they sent me a check. Looks like I'm going to have to do it to my next Prelude whenever I get it finished
