OK! why does my tach jump all over the place over 4,000 RPM?
one i hit 4000 RPM my tach will start skipping and jumping, all over the place. WTF is wrong with it? I even tried getting a sport comp tach and I wired it into the dist. wire.... same problem with both tachs now. HOw can I fix this, I want at least ONE tach to work. GOD this car is REALLY pissing me off about now. 8,000 worth of engine work just done, and now more problems than before. I swear. ******* car. But goddamn parents WONT let me sell it. sigh.
Check all electrical grounds including the thermostat housing ground, transmission cable ground and valve cover ground. Clean both sides of the ground eyelet and the back of the bolt with wire brush.. then put them back on.
Check for loose connections at the distributor or where the motor harness connects to the car harness.
Good luck. Electrical gremlins suck, man.

More than likely it's your distributor. I had the exact same problem with my CRX. I took it to a performance shop and they changed the distributor. I works great now.
update: I cleaned, checked all connections, grounds, ect. it still jumps, it seems to jump only at full or near full throttle over 4,000 RPM's.
any suggestions?
MIke... do u think this could be my ignitor?

I know exactly what your problem is I fixed a friends of mine (b16a). You need an igniter. I did exactly what you did cleaning the terminals, and got the same result, everyone thought it was the coil but if it was the coil you would have drivabilty problems and you have a signal problem.

is it just your tach or is it your entire car as well? it sounds to me that everyone here is answering to the wrong problem... i have seen many Hondas (mostly older)have jumpy tachs... as to an answer to your problem, i honestly don't know it... i just know it's a chronic defect on many older Hondas...
T.O.STREETRACER is right.
Your problem is the ignitor. I had the same problem, and a new $90 ignitor
from Honda fixed the problem

Also could be the ignitor as stated before.
no, actually i dident, I will do that right now. BTW if i got an MSD blaster coil and cap is this an ignitor? will this fix the problem? Sorry about be being dumb, just asking.
so my question is what exactly is an ignitor and will a MSD coil fix it? or are they completely differnt parts?

Do you have a Clifford alarm? Sometimes, if you have remote start, the tach wire to the alarm makes your tach **** up. Happened to me, just my .02
the problem has already been answered.
i have had the same thing about 3 times, it is the ingniter.
the igniter is found in your disributor and has four male connections coming out of it. three of which are on the top and the other one on the side.
you will have to undo 2 screws on the outside of your distributor to get it off. it will be a small box about 2"X1 1/2" made by NEC.
just ake sure you know which connections go where when you put it back together.
it is a 10 minute job you can do yourself.

to add my $.02
make sure you replace it with a BROWN ignitor, marked NEC like GEN2 HYBRID said, as the Black ignitors marked OKI are the faulty ones, and had a recall on them
my ignitor died a few weeks ago, and it turned out i had the black one, i replaced it with the brown ignitor, and all is well

for that much you might as well get a new distributor from distributor king, but the problem is definitely the ignitor
