Default Steering boot, I'm lost

I have a cracked steering boot. Not on the CV axle, but on one of the steering components near the front wheel. What is this? Should there be grease or any fluid in there? How quickly do I need to replace this and how hard is it? Thanks for any help.

that boot is to keep dust and grime out of the rack.
it doesn't hold any fluid or anything. mine has a crack in it as well.
you could use some tape or something to temporarily fix it.

if you replace it, either mark on the threads where the nut came up to before you loosen/remove it to take the boot off or you'll need to get an alignment done to fix the toe angle once you put everything back together.
