Something very wierd and unusual happened today...
Everyone swears by synthetic. Ive been runniing mobil1 for a while now.
What i thought was a tuning problem is not 100% so. at the same spot on my boost gauge in every gear my car hesitates/bogs once i past it. my egts while on the highway doing 80 mph were about 800C
i decided to change to regular castrol the other day for the hell of it.
now the car:
1) runs smoother
2) bog only occurs sometimes, mostly in 5th gear.
3) highway 80mph cruising egts are 700C
oh, one downside though, for some reason my idle dropps to like 500 rpm and sort of bogs up and down shortly after coming to stops every time, feels like she is about to cut off..
is there any explanation for the good and the bad??

Interesting. Ill stay posted on this. I've got sort of a hesitation that you desribed, nothing I am worried about. But if this is the case id change over too. Its mostly when Im doing partial throttle near boost.
thats wierd , i suppose that non synthetic is thinner by nature as most have stated , maybe the non synthetic's thicker viscosity offers a better barrier . who knows...

Strange. I was thinking what could have caused something like this and a few things came to mind. I'm going to ASSume that you were using the same viscosity of oil:
A: Runs smoother: Could be because of the simple fact that an oil change was done. What made you desire to change it in the first place? Perhaps it just simply was time for one.
B: Cars with dead oil will always lose power due to increased friction. Changing it would definitely be a step in the right direction.
C: EGT's will go down when friction goes down. There's less frictional heat being transferred to the piston so naturally the gasses won't be heated as much. If you lost 100ºC that's a staggering difference from a mere oil change. It's a 180ºF decrease (1472ºF vs 1292ºF). On the flipside of that, if you had any blowby with your synth your cyl temps would go up 100-200 degrees Farenheit (about 37-93ºC) so that could also be a possibility. Does your car have any oil consumption? If it does, that may be the source of your bog as oil makes its presence felt and either steal power or sets off your knock sensor.
In your reply please include as much information as possible such as the amount of boost you run on what turbo and the mileage of your internals, oil viscosity before and after, previous EGT's before the problem arose etc etc. It's hard to give an accurate response without all the paramaters known.

yes, visocity was the same. 10-30
one other thing i forgot to mention which was critical.
i made a post about once i hit full boost it feels like i run into a wall.
that feeling is no more there. wtf??
all from oil?
check the sig for setup.
and for those saying tuning issue, yes, i still have to go get another tune. :thumbup

something's def not right...tune or something. synthetic has the ability to not burn off like conventional oil. viscosity is the same between the two so that can't be the issue. i would suggest the oil change back to synthetic or at least your next change back to synthetic. how is the tune on the hondata?
i just got it tuned. a/f curves were cool, i was just missfiring up top and the curve was breaking up but i did finish the tune. since the tune, the only thing i have done is tighten the gap from .032 to .028 and installed msd6al. nothing else changed.

hey 1316130057,
what made me desire to change what? the oil or synt. to regular?
i had to change it b/c 3000 miles was up. changed from synt. to regular cause my oil lines are dripping a little oil and didnt want to keep refilling with synt. for the time.
does my car consume oil??
no, just drips a litttle

when it was gapped at .032 it bogged, now its at .028 and still bogs.
but the bog is much lighter now that i changed the oil

tuning
and i also think you may have needed a change before that 3k if you drove the car pretty hard. if you drive your car hard you should be changing your oil more frequently... i just suggest changing it more frequently....and i say go back to synthetic, i dont think the oil changing was the difference in the car. definately sounds like a tuning issue.

Sounds like he had some major borewashing going on at some point or another and turned the oil to 58octane in the process. I'd do a compression check before further progression. Then based on results, go retune.
cool stuff. Yeah, I changed the oil and my oil leaks went away near my turbo.
Went from non synthetic Quaker state to 1/2 blend Castrol. Worked great!
I heard castrol is tested and passed for turbocharged engines. That and the cheap price bought me

I know some manufacturer makes oil for turbo specific cars. I'm not sure if it's not just some marketing ploy or not, but it may be something worth entertaining. Buyer beware though.
SleepyEG, when are you gonna give me a copy of that avatar?

you have hondata? if so, you might need to update your ROM. Hondata is known for its hiccup at about -10 inches of vaccum.
