I came very close to failing the hydrocarbon part of California's dyno test. At 15mph the measured HC level (in PPM) was 59 - another 2PPM and I would have been above the 60PPM max at this speed. The 25mph level was 15, well under the 43 maximum at this level. My CO and NO numbers were well under the limits.

My car is a 2000 with 28k miles and with a Comptech intake, header (both CARB approved) and a Comptech exhaust. Stock cat, timing and everything else.

I ran the car on the highway first to get it up to temperature.

Any ideas why I came so close to failing? What were other people's numbers?

 

were you using 91 octane gas?

Could bolt on parts like I/H/E affect emissions? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, they just improve airflow and improving airflow will not worsen emissions.

Change your oil, oil filter and air filter, before doing an emissions test. It **might** help.

But wouldnt that hurt the ITR? because you are suppose to pump 91 or higher

 

empty tank, put $3 of 87 gas in it and take your test. as soon as you are done, put 91 in it with octane boost.

but why 91 WITH octane boost? is the octane boost supposed to cancel out the 87 that has already been put through the system?

 

I'm sure you wouldn't use all of that 87 octane in the fuel tank so for me its just piece of mind.

 

How much oil does your ITR burn?

That'll spike HCs through the roof. It'll burn the gas, but the oil just turns to soot and makes emissions sniffers unhappy.

You've got a while to worry about it again, but a cleaned combustion chamber (direct spray solvent) and fresh spark plugs do the best for that problem. Of course... oil soot residue is a bigger problem than emissions... but rebuilds should be done for more than passing smog, eh?

Although I don't condone purposeful pollution... the things that bring me joy are often fueled by gasoline. God Bless Honda.

 

I doubt the ITR can even run down the block and not puke all over the place on 87.

I'm running Mobil 1 so burn the usual quart every 3k miles.

If you sell the car within 90 days of passing your smog test you will not have to get the car retested.

Is it possible to even pass with an aftermarket catylitic converter? I think you can only pass the sniffer with a stock cat.

Did you fail the sniffer test or the visual inspection? The JDM 4-1 will fail the visual.

failed the sniffer, passed the visual.

the JDM4-1 had a heat shield over it.

i believe, most aftermarket cats will NOT pass CARB. kinda sucks with the current car cause it runs rich like a pig.

 

I, too, passed the visual with my JDM ITR header. Passed the visual with my Carsound, too, but failed the test. Then I put in an OEM cat and passed.

 

i was lead to believe that carsound cat's would pass smog (I have the smsp 2.5" carsound). Which is why I refrained from getting a test pipe. sigh..
