Another darned Diff question !!! ITR vs. Quaife...Opinions???
I am in the process of installing my 4.7 final drive and the custom Mugen diff from Kingmotorsports will not fit the 4.7 final drive. I have the tranny apart but the ring gear is too big and won't fit the Mugen.
So it's either an ITR, OPM, or Quaife. I checked the archives and most of the info is confusing (376 different threads).
For those of you in Honda Challenge or other forms of racing, what is the main difference between a torsion LSD and a clutch pack diff like Quaife uses.
According to the archives the ITR diff seems to break frequently. I have a Quaife in my BMW which has 20,000 race miles.
Why should I choose one over the other for my H4 car (ignoring for the moment the big difference in cost).
Also if any one uses the OPM diffs, which type is it.
Regards,
Jon P. Kofod (who is rapidly running out of time to get his tranny back together for Beaver Run).

The Quaife is a Torsen-type diff, not a clutch. You have experience with the Quaife, go with what you know.
Literally trillions of racers can't be wrong.

Rich,
My mistake you are correct the Quaife is gear driven and doesn't contain clutch packs.
That being said, if I only need the diff to last till the end of the season (car is going back to GSR specs) is it worth the extra money for a Quaife. What's the advantage, if any?
Cheers,
Jon

The advantage of a Quaife over other good racing diffs other than the durability? I haven't read anything other than smoother operation at low speeds (not an issue) and the durability like you say isn't an issue.
If I knew I'd be in a class for years or driving the car for years like I knew I would be driving my Civic, I would (and did) go with the Quaife. For you it seems like the OPM might be a good option.

I'll trade you my ITR diff for your Mugen ..
The Honda diff is not very agressive, though it does get the power to the ground. I would go with the Quaffe over the Honda. You might also try Kaaz if you like the clutch units.
The OPM diff is a clutch type.

Zsolt,
The Mugen diff I have was specifically made for an LS box (don't ask me what the difference is between this unit and the one for a GSR). Kingmotorsport had it custom made for the tranny when the Nonnemaker's where running the car in Grand Am Cup. That's why it doesn't work with my new final drive.
I think I am going with the Quaife unless someone else here sways me towards an ITR or OMP.
Cheers,
Jon

Would the standard Mugen diff for a GSR fit the 4.7? That another option. I'm running the 2-way Mugen diff on a d-series Si tranny and it's just awesome, if probably a little too agressive for Solo2. Cant really compare against anything else though since the only other car I've sampled with an LSD was an ITR. There was also a TypeSH but that's another story altogether...

If you are looking for more information on diff's have a look at the May/04 issue of grassroots motorsports. (Great magazine
) They had a really great article on the FWD limited slip.
A local guy runs a ITR and was using the stock diff and then switched to the Quaife. From what I remember of his comments, he liked the engagement of the Quaife better. With better drive out of the corner.
I run a quaife in a ITS GSR. I don't know the exact mileage but it is somewhere over 15,000 race miles. It's never been out of the car and works as good today as when I bought the car. Quaife also warrenties the product even when used in a race car.
So if you want my opinion I would strongly suggest Quaife.

At a recent track day, I rode along in a friend's GSR with ITR tranny and the ATS LSD. OMG....it works! In places where his car should have been understeering with him letting off the gas, the front wheels were getting lots of traction and he would just floor it through the turns.
I could feel the LSD working even from pass.'s seat and it really made a believer out of me.

Just so you know, if your not used to riding in a car with an LSD, all of them will feel like this. It's really hard to say which is better unless you have driven the same car, same set-up, with different diffs.
For me, I am going with an ITR diff simply for cost reasons!

I understand what your saying about really knowing which one LSD is better. But I used to have an ITR and tracked it more than a few times. I've done ride-alongs in my share of ITRs and none of them behaved like my friend's ATS equipped GSR.
