well im going to replace my head gasket tom. when I do this If i see oil/coolant in the no. 1&2 cylinders (bad part of gasket) how do I clean it up or does it just burn up after I put the new gasket in? also does anyone have the torque specs for the head bolts?
here is what im thinking to do
first tighten them to 27lbs then start over again and do it to 53lbs!
and what order should I tighten them in?

what motor?

use carb cleaner... lots of it...scrub the cylinders... drain the coolant out and drain it all out of the block, and then shove towels in the sleeves so you dont spray carb cleaner in there... Get yourself some scotch brite & carb cleaner and scrub a dub dub.

If its D series, its 27, 53, 74lbs torque

In the helms and Haynes manual it tells you to torque it to 22 then 52 ftlbs of torque. There is no third 74ft lb step listed there. Where did you get this information from?

i could have sworn when we did my buddy's d16y8 head, i read in the chilton manual and it said 27, 53, 74... It might have been 22, 52, 72, but i do remember going to 70+lb ft... I dont think 52lbs is enough to hold a head down tightly...

i don't know if chilton's is the best manual for such a job- they "cover" all civic and del Sol models 96-00 in that book...that sheit is a little vague

52 lbs is a lot when it's distributed over 8-10 bolts, but i don't know if that's enough just my input (however reliable that is)

Dont use scotch brite and carb cleaner period.. infact dont do a single thing this person says.

just get a rag and try to wipe out as much as you can and then just burn off the small amounts. YOU Never want to score the block nor the sleeves if its just a head gasket change.

Also find the online HELM PDF file and read it carefully to see the torque and sequence of install
