Default SMOG issues (with JDM Mugen header, carsound 2.5", Mugen Cat-back)

Will this setup pass CA SMOG? It's about time for all the 00 ITR to do their first check up by the DMV.. I like to know if I will pass. Never had a MIL issue nor have I ever fainted from sniffing too much of my JDM flavored exhause fume.

Carsound may be your biggest problem.

I pass with the JDM header (use the heat shield). ***Won't pass visual with a Mugen header, unless you find a nice smog tester****

But i have to swap my cat in order to pass.

No, OBDII with two O2 sensors. I'll give it a shot and see if they will smog me.

read up on past posts on how to better prepare your vehicle for smog, such as fully heat up the cat, tune up, etc.

first of all, is your CRAPSOUND cat still intact? i had a CRAPSOUND cat fail in 6 months. my AF was also tuned to be around 14...so i cant see it being overly rich...

my CRAPSOUND was 100% hollow after 6 months. i started to hear a clanking noise after about 2 months of initial install, but then it went away after a month or so. thats when i knew that piece of S**T cat was dead.

good luck with your smog check...with the new rollers, a quick trip to church wouldnt hurt

I had JDM ITR header with heatshields, stock cat, 2.5" cat back, and passed. This is in a GS-R though.

Just failed smog with a 9-month old Carsound and a JDM ITR header. Goddamn gross polluter. Solution: new cat. Depends on how old your cat is I guess.

can't you go to a private inspection station in Cali?

I just get my inspection done at my mechanics, no worries. Just drive in and sticks my new inspection sticker on. In a state where even front tints will fail the car, I'm happy private inspection is still around.

Unless the Carsound cat is brand new, you'll most likely fail. The Carsound cats are known to be good just long enough to pass smog, there's a reason that the OEM cat is $800+. This information coming from the CA Smog Ref that used to be in the building next to HyTech Exhaust, he learned quite a bit on what cats work, and which ones don't.

Smog inspection is part of the state inspection in NJ. So in addition to checking for smog, DMV has an entire list of things to check like ride height, bulb colors, exhaust, etc...

State owned/operated inspection stations are the worse

I suprisingly passed my local emissions test without incident. Hooked up the OBD-2 harness, measured the car on the dyno and printed out a report which showed the car polluting less than when it had the stock header and cat! I was genuinely suprised, I thought the car might actually fail.

It also didn't hurt that the tech testing my car was a big Honda fan and loved the R Of course, for the 3 straight time (once ever 2 years) I was asked if I had a motor swap in the car. lol.

The car may run a little lean, and that could be your downfall, I know it was mine with a JDM R header on my old Si. If you have a high NO level, you are more than likely running lean.
