Goddamn. I seriously though they were *at most* $100million. Goddamn. There are probably entire countries that don't have a GDP of half a billion. Goddamn.
Ho. Lee. Shyte!

ferrari must sell alot of cars, haha you'd have to sell like 500 enzo's just for the F1 yearly budget
driver salary for minardi is 500,000?
Ferrari spends 15,000,000 in wind tunnel testing alone????

Is there a similar list that shows how the sponsorship dollars offset the team expenditures for the season? I can imagine, "Ahem, Mr.Vodaphone, please write us a check for $250,000,000 and we will give you a 15 inch x 15 inch piece of white vinyl on the side of our race car..."
So damn expensive... are these teams FULLY funded by sponsorships? Where is the return on investment from a guy like Frank Williams? Merchandise? How bout Minardi? Where do they profit at the end of the year? (assuming they are profitable) Do the sponsorship dollars combined cover the cost of the season?
Dennis- who knew it was expensive but now is dumbfounded.

The insanity continues. That is one reason why F1 had a huge discussion at Monaco about what they might want to do. With tobacco money not always available to help offset the other sponsors anymore the pinch is beginning to be felt somewhat. If a tiny (not frontline) team can do it for under $50,000,000 then the giants should be able to reel in their expenses to a similar level-thus leveling the playing field somewhat. I see no reason for 16 people working in the pitbox let alone several million dollars worth of engineering talent being trackside. Make the cars simpler as is the case in IRL and CART and see what happens-probably better competition like it was years ago. $15 million for wind tunnel testing-no wonder Hendrick wants to build their own (eek) for example. There was an article recently that questioned the public understanding of the technology in the cars versus the parade format of competition. Help-roadracing for amateurs is expensive enough-this is nuts.

That's exactly what caught my eye. I know it takes mega buciks to go fast and be at the head of the class, but this amount of $$ is obscene. Imagine for a moment if any of us amateur club racers or wannabe racers had an annual budget that was, oh let's say a very small fraction of Ferrari's total budget, something like one-hundredth of one percent. We'd be like a fatted calf w/ ~$43K is our annual racing pockets. How sweet would that be?
I was just reading the latest issue of GRM and saw that you can now pick up the latest factory model of Porsche GT3 cup car for a mere ~$300K and change, and I gagged on that price tag, too. Seems like a steal by comparison to the F1 budgets...
Casey, who realizes it's all relative, and knows his absolute racing budget is very small...

I'd be able to afford those carbon fiber fender louvres I've had my eye on!
Scott, thinks that even those of us who can barely afford to do a little club racing or autocross are still EXTREMELY Fortunate, and I'm not sure that what we do isn't kinda obscene in the context of so many millions struggle daily for mere survival....

All that for an elite car racing league that most people don't even watch.
It's really shameful if you ask me.

i think its just the most of the people in US don't watch. ask anyone in eourpe, its a big thing.
if you have been in the pit and the vip area(and see what equipment they got), you will understand why they can spend so much $$$$.

there was a show on tech TV, "the tech of formula 1." It was a really great show. They pretty much followed the Renault team around a couple of years ago. They did wind tunnel testing from 6am to 11pm 365 days a year. That's 6205 hours a year of wind tunnel testing.
And they're not even one of the higher budget teams.
I'm surprised so many people are surprised by those budgets. I remember last summer reading a sports illustrated feature about Michael Schumacher. They listed the prices of alot of things, like the steering wheels that cost 3x my car.

Didn't mean to suggest that I don't consider myself fortunate or, worse yet, appear that I have a sense of entitlement. I'm just blown away by the sheer magnitude of the dollars involved. That's a different world and I don't even know how to approach trying to relate to it...

Did I offend? Not sure if you're reacting to my comments, or if this a more generalized reaction to the stark contrast between the reality for many where survival is dominant concern, vs. the reality where some have the discretion to spend $$ on racing. Whichever, I see your point in, and in my view it applies to all other areas where people can choose to spend $$ on things beyond meeting their basic needs for survival, be it downhill skiing, going out for a night on the town, buying a nice painting, having cosmetic surgery, etc.
Casey, who asks why single out racing?

Imagine if any of those teams would set out to build an A-Mod autocross car with that kind of budget and then throw Shumi behind the wheel. Well, one thing's for sure (other than the fact that it would never happen), everybody else's PAX would head south. Way south...
"F1 Magazine 2003 budgets (Keep in mind these are 2003 figures) F1 Magazine ran an article in March 2003 in which they admitted that no accurate figures were available due to the secretive nature of the business."
Remember these are just opinions on F1 budgets. Some of the teams could be spending twice the suggested budgets.

More likely half, since it appears to be a big screaming TAX WRITEOFF!

If I was Ferrari I would take a year off and build a water park with beer instead of water. It would be awesome except for the Guiness Slide, where you get stuck halfway down since that stuff is thicker than molten lead.
