Any stolen NY ITRs lately: Please read ASAP
Here's the deal - I am going to be very vauge as to the details of this because I don't know who's reading and I don't want retaliation for posting this.
Basically, I know of a guy we'll call him "Idiot." I met Idiot through another friend and Idiot has a Civic. I was notified by my friend that Idiot recently purchased a JDM ITR motor. So, I decided to see the JDM motor installed on Idiot's car.
When I arrive to view Idiot's car, I notice a 5 lug conversion. When I popped the hood this JDM ITR motor had a B18C5 stamp on it. Hmmm. That's odd - a B18C5 from the motherland? Another oddity I notice is that there is no VIN tag, because this JDM motor is obviously a USDM motor. There were fairly fresh scratches in the block where the VIN tag once was.
After shooting the bull, I ask what he paid for it. He then tells me he paid $5,500 for the JDM motor, 5 lug conversion, and complete interior. Idiot tells me he bought it from a shop that's in NY. I don't know where this shop is or if they are in the city, but that's some shady **** going on if you ask me.
I am assuming that the engine is at least out of a 2000 or 2001 ITR if all of the parts came from the same car. I did not get to look at the date stamp on the engine block, but the wheels were gunmetal, so they were from a 2000 or 2001.
If anyone is missing their 2000-2001 ITR, I will lead you to him, but I will not get too involved as this could really come back and bite me in the ***. This guy knows what I have and where I can be found, so I'd rather remain anonymous.
As stated the wheels are gunmetal and they have a set of Falken Azenis on them with fairly fresh tread. The calipers on the car are the stock gold color, so they have not been painted or touched. The motor had a Comptech header and red spark plug wires. This is the best I can do in identifying it for anyone concerned. PM me if you wish to discuss this a little further.

There are way too many variables involved. NY is a haven for thieves. It goes in seasons and the summer street season is about to begin in NYC. Most people I have noticed tend to stray away from HuntsPoint and other street racing locals during the colder months. When summer starts is when it gets bad and cars get jacked.
There are alot of bogus shops in the 5 burroughs and surrounding counties could be from anywhere.
PM me, this is interesting. Was it red?

another problem is that motor could be from anywhere, not just NY. unless the original owner happens to recognize the parts you mention, and happend to scratch the VIN into the block in another spot, then I doubt much if anything will come of this. What I would do if I was you, is head out to the local spots with these guys, then make an annonomous call to the local cops saying they are driving like they are drunk or high and see if the cops can stop them and check the car over. If the cops are smart, they will run some VINs and see that motor has no VIN, and confiscate the car. But if that happens, of course it will just go to auction and someone else will have anyway. Its a lose lose situation really, but atleast these shady doods might get it taken away from them.

isnt it a felony to possess/use stolen parts?
just report him. if your buddy really knows nothing, then im sure the cops will chase down the shop he bought it from, unless he bought it without a receipt...in which case he definately deserves

if it was the motor that's one thing... but hell.. the lug and interior? just report him it's without a dought stolen. He could lead you to a big theft ring and our cars will be that much safer.
If I was going to look the other way, I wouldn't have posted anything here at all.
The problem is that I have zero proof that these parts are stolen. To be honest, I am assuming that they're stolen based on what he told me he paid for them. All's he has to say is that he bought them from a salvaged car. I parted out a car a long time ago and the insurance company that I bought it from only gave me the title and no receipt. I ended up leaving it in a pair of pants that went through the wash and the title was pretty much destroyed. So, he could certainly talk his way out of that if he was creative enough.
Fact of the matter is that if I do not have solid proof that the parts were stolen, the police in my area are not going to do jack ****.
After thinking about it last night, this guy could have given me a line about buying it in NY. He may have stolen the car himself either in NY or a local state, so I don't know how much truth there is to the NY shop thing.
I will answer PMs later today if I get a chance at work.

Unfortunately as your intentions are very good, its a long shot of finding the real owner.....as previously stated by the Op-dogg, there are way too many variables involved. Also as RTW DC2 stated, the items may not even be local. Often times thives will jack the **** and ship it immediately to get it as far away as possible so that this does not occur. And so nobody is wondering how i know that.....my buddies R was stolen and the motor and Tranny along with interior and wheels (same situation) was found out in Cali not two weeks after they disappeared, totaled in some guys front yard wrapped around a tree! Thanks for trying to help somebody out though.....wish there were more people like you out there!
the only thing really going for you on this is that the VIN was scratched off. Thats enough reason for the cops to check it out. Its up to you if you wanna get in the middle of that or not.

I agree with ginnis02, however, no one here can ask you to put your *** on the line for someone else's parts. But, if I were you I would personally see to it that that kid idiot who has the stolen ITR stuff will run into so much trouble he will never buy anything stolen again. Cops couldn't give two ***** about out cars. They aren't going to track the owner down, they won't get the parts back to the original owner. They will confiscate the parts and that **** will go to an auction. However, I would try to get more info off the block and other parts. You can't find the original owner off the center console badge. Honda, for some reason that is archived on these forums, didn't publich VIN #'s corresponding to production #'s. Make sure that kid idiot catches a lot of hell for rockn' stoll parts...the cops will definately harass him though I doubt he will do time. Call the cops or give them an annonimous tip regarding illegal parts. Also, the engine isn't legal in that car anyway so the whole car will be impounded regardless. No one here should get mad at you for doing nothing although it is good to know that there are people out there that actually DO care about other people. You have to decide whether the risk is worth it to turn this kid in. Personally...thank you for making an effort to set things right.
go lookin out Lynx, hopefully it all works out. but try not to get into trouble in the progress.
and is it just me or when reading Lynx post, you read it with a whisper in your head?
