Default Are different brand of synthetic motor oil different?

I'm thinking of changing to synthetic oil in my Accord (45K miles on it). Does different brand of synthetic oild make a difference? For example, the Mobil 1's are $19 for 5 quarts, but the SuperTech's are only $11 for 5 quarts. I'm thinking of changing my oil every 5-6k miles. I don't race my Accord, it won't see 4000rpm often. So under these circumstances, does the brand of synthetic oil make a difference?

Thanks.

All the synthetic blend I found is for higher mileage cars. My car is pretty low mileage, and I've heard that some synthetic blend is only 20% synthetic, so I don't want to waste money on synthetic blends.

Is 6000 mile oil change interval acceptable?

Thanks.

Yes synthetic oils are different...they have different ingredients and different amounts of zinc and moly. (Some don't have any zinc or moly at all!)

Mobil 1 is the best you are going to find on the shelf at wal mart...it's a group 4 oil, very very good stuff.

Blend = garbage, don't waste your money.

Castrol Syntec = garbage...not even a full synthetic.

Stick with mobil 1 IMO if you are satisfied with off the shelf oil. If you want to go the extra step, get Amsoil, redline, or schaeffer's. All good brands.

To find out how long you can get away with changing your oil, send it to get a UOA done and check the results. Go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and read up. Don't post, just read, those guys are experts over there.

If you are worried about the cost, just use dino oil and change it every 2500 or 3k...it will still cost less than one change of synthetic.

mobil 1 is supposed to be the only true synthetic oil with retail availability.

The others, (castrol, valvoline, etc.) are basically super refined dinos juice.

As mentioned above, visit bobistheoilguy.com for more information on this than you can possibly ever hope to read.

Castrol syntec 0w-30 is also full sythetic. Look for made in germany on the back label, not all syntec 0w-30 is this german stuff though. You can find it a autozone. Also, this oil is a thck 30 weight, it is close to a 40 weight

Wow, I didn't know there's that much difference bewtween brands. I will use Mobil 1 then, cause the Amsoil and Reline oil is just too expensive for a street car.

im guessing you have a new model accord? with 45k if you check in your owners manual, they have the recommended oil you should use... that should give you a better range of what to use and what not... most daily driven hondas dont really need "full synthetic" oils... As long as you keep your car well maintenenced and drive normally,. you shouldnt have a problem.

I was considering switching to Mobil 1 in my '99 Accord (~ 62,000 miles, rarely above 4,000 rpms (I have a tach, it's a manual transmission)).

Question: Does it matter what filter I use with Mobil 1 in the Accord? Would a Fram filter from Wal-Mart work fine with Mobil 1?

Don't use fram filters, they are the worst filters you can possibly buy. Mobil1 filters, purolator pure1, Honda OEM filtech ones are some good filters. Read the link above for more information.

K&N, Mobil 1 are some of the best retail oil filters.
